The Zopfli Compression Algorithm is a new open sourced general purpose data compression library that got its name from a Swiss bread recipe. It is an implementation of the Deflate compression algorithm that creates a smaller output size compared to previous techniques. The smaller compressed size allows for better space utilization, faster data transmission, and lower web page load latencies. Furthermore, the smaller compressed size has additional benefits in mobile use, such as lower data transfer fees and reduced battery use. The higher data density is achieved by using more exhaustive compression techniques, which make the compression a lot slower, but do not affect the decompression speed. The exhaustive method is based on iterating entropy modeling and a shortest path search algorithm to find a low bit cost path through the graph of all possible deflate representations.

Zopfli

The output generated by Zopfli is typically 3–8% smaller compared to zlib at maximum compression, and we believe that Zopfli represents the state of the art in Deflate-compatible compression. Zopfli is written in C for portability. It is a compression-only library; existing software can decompress the data. Zopfli is bit-stream compatible with compression used in gzip, Zip, PNG, HTTP requests, and others.

Due to the amount of CPU time required — 2 to 3 orders of magnitude more than zlib at maximum quality — Zopfli is best suited for applications where data is compressed once and sent over a network many times, for example, static content for the web. By open sourcing Zopfli, thus allowing webmasters to better optimize the size of frequently accessed static content, we hope to make the Internet a bit faster for all of us.

Interested in finding bright, enthusiastic new contributors to your open source project? Apply to be a mentoring organization in our Google Summer of Code program. We are now accepting applications from open source projects interested in acting as mentoring organizations.

Now in its 7th year, Google Summer of Code is a program designed to pair university students from around the world with mentors at open source projects in such varied fields as academia, language translations, content management systems, games, and operating systems. Since 2005, over 4,500 students from 85 countries have completed the Google Summer of Code program with the support of over 300 mentoring organizations. Students earn a stipend for their work during the program, allowing students to gain exposure to real-world software development and an opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits, thus “flipping bits, not burgers” during their school break. In return, mentoring organizations have the opportunity to identify and attract new developers to their projects and these students often continue their work with the organizations after Google Summer of Code concludes.

This year we’re excited to expand the scope of the program by encouraging experienced Google Summer of Code mentoring organizations to refer newer, smaller organizations they think could benefit from the program to apply to be mentoring organizations.

The deadline for applying to be a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code is Friday, March 11th at 23:00 UTC (3pm PST). The list of accepted organizations will be posted on the Google Summer of Code site on Friday, March 18th. Students will then have 10 days to reach out to the accepted organizations and discuss their ideas before we begin accepting student applications on March 28th.

Sitemaps are text files containing a list of all web pages that exist on your website and are accessible to crawlers and users. These helps visitors and search engine bots to find pages on website. Sitemaps are a way to help Google indexing pages on your site which otherwise might not be discovered.

If your blog is hosted on blogspot.com (or if you are using a self-hosted version of Blogger with a custom domain) you will be surprised to find out that the default sitemap file, contains only the 26 most recent pages of your blog which in normal case should contain all URLs of a website.

Many webmaster pretend to teach others how to drive traffic to blogs or websites yet leaving out the most important factors like sitemaps. There are still other websites who keep on providing the old methods of generating a sitemap for blogger which are not any effective.

How to add a complete Sitemap for your Blogger Blog

Step 1: If you haven't done this already, sign-in to your Google Webmasters account and add your blog. For details, check this tutorial on how to add a blog to Google.

Step 2: Once your blog is added to Google, go to Webmaster Dashboard and click on your site address

Step 3: On the left panel choose Site Configuration >> Sitemaps - then click on Add sitemap.

This year at SXSW our developer team is putting together an action-packed two days of lightning talks, code labs, developer hangouts, a LEGO Mindstorm hackathon, a mixology event, and fun surprises. Our Google Developers House (#googlesxsw) will be open on March 10th - 11th and is part of the Google Village at SXSW, which is free to all conference attendees.

Come hang out with Google Developer Advocates, Engineers, Product Managers, and other Googlers from across the company. Come for major hacking or just to chill at the Google TV lounge or roast s'mores by the GTUG firepit. If you can’t make it, don’t worry. Our partners at NewTek will be live streaming our lightning talks and the LEGO Mindstorm Rumble on our YouTube channel.

2) Click on the “Add a site” button at the top of the screen.

3) Enter the URL address of your blog (for example http://my-site.blogspot.com/) and press Continue

4) Select the method you would like to use to verify ownership.
You can either upload an HTML file with a name we specify (which is not possible with Google Blogger account), or you can add a META tag to your site's index file.

Choose Alternate Methods:

5) Under Alternative Methods Click Add a meta tag to your site’s home page.

6) Copy the Meta tag Code generated.

7) Open a new tab and login into your blogger account.

8) Go to Template > Edit HTML

...and search (CTRL + F) for the following tag:

9) Just below of it, paste the META code and then click on the Save Template button.

10) Switch to Google Webmaster Tools tab and press on the "Verify" button.

Are you developing on App Engine today or interested in learning how to use it? If you've gone through all the great App Engine docs and Getting Started tutorials (Python, Java, or Go) but want to take your App Engine skills a step further, then Google Developers Academy (GDA) is the place to go! We launched GDA this past summer at Google I/O 2012, with content for beginners as well as seasoned developers. What can you find on App Engine in GDA today?

If you’re interested in getting more background on what cloud computing is and where App Engine fits into that ecosystem, then this intro class (Introduction to Google App Engine) is for you. Once you’re done with this class, you’ll be ready to tackle the Getting Started tutorial, and after that, move on to the App Engine 101 in Python class.

While some of the material found in App Engine 101 is similar to what's in the Getting Started tutorial, the 101 class targets developers who skipped the tutorial or completed it at some point in the past but don't want to repeat the exact same thing. The main differences include the following changes to the tutorial's content:

Use of the Python NDB API
Jinja2 templates
Discussion of data consistency and datastore indexes

You can use the relational MySQL-compatible Google Cloud SQL service as an alternative to App Engine's native non-relational datastore. Some applications do require a relational database, especially if you’re porting an existing app that relies on one. In this case, you want to learn about Cloud SQL and how to use it with App Engine. That’s why we have the Using Python App Engine with Google Cloud SQL class.

Of course, Google is best known for search. With App Engine's powerful Search API, you can index not only plain text, but also HTML, atoms, numbers, dates, and locations (lat/long). Getting Started with the Python Search API is a two-part class that will indeed get you started: in the first part of the class, you’ll create an application using a variety of data and learn how to index such data (using "documents"). In Part 2, you’ll learn how to execute queries as well as how to update your indexes when you modify your data.

If variety is what you're after, then look no further than the newest class in GDA: Getting Started with Go, App Engine and Google+ API. You will not only learn how to create an App Engine app using the Go programming language, but also learn how to connect to the Google+ API with the Google APIs Client Library for Go.

Wordpress.com It provides a blog with .wordpress.com domain. Its free just like blogger. It has more customization features as compared to blogger with more beautiful and professional themes. The cons of wordpress is that it don;t allow javascripts so you may not able to put your adsense code in it unless you host the complete website yourself thorugh wordpress.org. The various plugins and templates associated with wordpress makes it the choice for professional bloggers but its complexity is against it.

Hubpages.com Hubpages has emerged as a fast blogging platform with in built Search Engine Optimization features which ensures that your posts are automatically listed in Google search and are enhanced accordingly. Its relatively new but is growing at a fast rate. It can easily be customized with amazon or adsense for ads serving, and with its increasing popularity in blogging world, it may prove a better choice.

Blog.com Its not so popular like the above platforms but is no mean in features as compared. It has the best facility of sharing files to the world which is not allowed in blogger. Its less used property may provide you a better domain. Its domain includes .blog.com. Templates are professional looking and it provides a better user interface.

My opinion. If you are here, you must be a newbie. Start with blogger. Expertise with its different features. Get used to it. Try adsense with it. Earn some money. Try Search engine Optimization. Blogger is a blogging platform of Google. Meta Tag appears in Google Search Results just below the title of the post and is considered by Google while it is ranking & it also determines what your site is about. So, Meta Tag description is an important part in SEO. Here I will explain the process of Meta Tag description and add in blogger platform. To enable Meta Tag in your blogger hosted Blog just do the following:

1. Login & go to your Blogger Dashboard. Go to Settings and Click on Search Preferences.

2. Click on Meta Tags Description and then click on ‘Yes’ to enable it. Add the description in the text box within 150 Characters. Finally Click on Save Changes.

How to Add Meta Tag for Individual Posts

After completing the above process now you can add Meta Tag for individual post. For this purpose just follows this process:

1. Go to any post at your Dashboard & Click Edit.

2. Just under the Post Settings, you will see one option called “Search Description.”

3. Write Description for your post (Meta tag) in search description text box. Write your description under 150 characters. Finally click ‘Done’.
