Telling us your preferred domain URL format
Some webmasters want their sites indexed under the www version of their domain; others want their sites indexed without the www. Which do you prefer? Now you can tell us and we'll do our best to do what you like when crawling and indexing your site. Note that it might take some time for changes to be reflected in our index, but if you notice that your site is currently indexed using both versions of your domain, tell us your preference.

Downloading query stats for all subfolders
Do you like seeing the top queries that returned your site? Now you can download a CSV file that shows you the top queries for each of your subfolders in the results.

Seeing revamped crawl errors
Now you can see at a glance the types of errors we get when crawling your site. You can see a table of the errors on the summary page, with counts for each error type. On the crawl errors page, you can still see the number of errors for type, as well as filter errors by date.

Managing verification
If somebody from your team no longer has write access to a site and should no longer be a verified owner of it, you can remove the verification file or meta tag for that person. When we periodically check verification, that person's account will no longer be verified for the site. We've added the ability to let you request that check so that you don't have to wait for our periodic process. Simply click the "Manage site verification" link, make note of the verification files and meta tags that may exist for the site, remove any that are no longer valid, and click the "Reverify all site owners" button. We'll check all accounts that are verified for the site and only leave verification in place for accounts for which we find a verification file or meta tag.

Other enhancements
You'll find a number of other smaller enhancements throughout the webmaster tools, all based on your feedback. One of the many useful features of Webmaster Tools is the ability to adjust settings for your site, such as crawl rate or geographic target. We've been steadily adding settings over time and have now gotten to the point where they merit their own page. That's right, Webmaster Tools now provides a single, dedicated page where you can see and adjust all the settings for your site.

The settings that have been moved to the new Settings page are:
1. Geographic Target
2. Preferred domain control
3. Opting in to enhanced image search
4. Crawl rate control





Changing a Setting
Whenever you change a setting, you will be given an option to save or cancel the change.

Please note: The Save/Cancel option is provided on a per setting basis and hence if you change multiple settings, you'll have to click the Save button associated with each setting.


Expiration of a setting
Some of the settings are time-bounded. That is, your setting will expire after a certain time period. For example, the crawl rate setting has an expiration period of 90 days. After this period, it's automatically reset to the default setting. Whenever you visit the Settings page, you can view the date that your setting will expire underneath the setting name.

Every now and then in the webmaster blogosphere and forums, this issue comes up: when a webmaster performs a [site:example.com] query on their website, the number of indexed results differs from what is displayed in their Sitemaps report in Webmaster Tools. Such a discrepancy may smell like a bug, but it's actually by design. Your Sitemap report only reflects the URLs you've submitted in your Sitemap file. The site operator, on the other hand, takes into account whatever Google has crawled, which may include URLs not included in your Sitemap, such as newly added URLs or other URLs discovered via links.

Think of the site operator as a quick diagnosis of the general health of your site in Google's index. Site operator results can show you:
  • a rough estimate of how many pages have been indexed
  • one indication of if your site has been hacked
  • if you have duplicate titles or snippets
Here is an example query using the site operator:



Your Sitemap report provides more granular statistics about the URLs you submitted, such as the number of indexed URLs vs. the number submitted for crawling, and Sitemap-specific warnings or errors that may have occurred when Google tried to access your URLs.

Today we’re announcing a new initiative that makes it easier for users to verify domains for Google services like Webmaster Tools and Google Apps.

First, some background on this initiative. To use certain Google services with your website or domain, you currently have to verify that you own the site or domain, since these services can share sensitive data (like search queries) or operate Internet-facing services (like hosted email) on your behalf.

One of our supported verification methods is domain verification. Currently this method requires a user to manually create a DNS TXT record to prove their ownership. For many users, this can be challenging and difficult to do.

So now, in collaboration with Go Daddy and eNom, we’re introducing a simple, automated solution for domain verification that guides you through the process in a few easy steps.

If your domain name records are managed by eNom or Go Daddy, in the Google site verification interface you will see a new, easier verification method as shown below.

   

Selecting this method launches a pop-up window that asks you to log in to the provider using your existing account with them.

  

The first time you log in, you’ll be asked to authorize the provider to access the Google site verification service on your behalf.

 

Next you’ll be asked to confirm that you wish to verify the domain.

   

And that’s it! After a few seconds, your domain should be automatically verified and a confirmation message displayed.

 

Now eNom and Go Daddy customers can more quickly and easily verify their domains to use with Google services like Webmaster Tools and Google Apps.

We’re also happy to share that Bluehost customers will be able to enjoy the same capability in the near future. And we look forward to working with more partners to bring easier domain verification to even more users. (Interested parties can contact us via this form.)

seo Google Hackfest and Reception at RailsConf 2013

Seo Master present to you: Many of the developer and enterprise products presented at Google I/O are of great interest to the Rails Community. We know developers attending RailsConf are ready to roll up their sleeves to start hacking, so Google is hosting a hackfest and reception at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel in Maryland DF (5th Floor). The event will be on June 9th from 7:00pm to 11:30pm, and of course we'll have food, beer and swag. Space is limited, so please register now, we'll send out an email when your registration has been confirmed.

Steven Bazyl will be helping folks integrate their existing Rails apps into Google Apps Marketplace using OpenID, OAuth, and the Google Data APIs. The Google Apps Marketplace offers products and services designed for Google users, including installable apps that integrate with Google Apps.

Ryan Brown and John Woodell will be getting folks setup with Duby or JRuby on App Engine, and David Masover will be helping folks with the DataMapper adapter. Google App Engine enables developers to build and host web apps on the same systems that power Google applications. JVM languages like Duby and JRuby operate on App Engine for Java.

Seth Ladd will be available to talk about the Chrome Web Store. The Chrome Web Store a very easy way to distribute and monetize apps written in HTML, HTML5, or even Flash. The Chrome Web Store is a perfect way to market and distribute your Rails application, run that app on any platform or device (mobile or desktop), sign up users, and make money.

Seth will also be running two surveys at the conference, and would love your feedback on HTML5 and the Chrome Web Store. These in-person surveys are to help him gauge developer interest and knowledge in these technologies. To entice participants, he will have lots of t-shirts on hand to give away to attendees at the conference who participates in the survey. Look for him while at the conference, let him know your thoughts, and collect your t-shirt (while supplies last).

RailsConf attendees that sign up for the hackfest by June 8th, can request a Google Storage account to use at the hackfest. Google Storage for Developers a RESTful service for storing and accessing your data on Google's infrastructure. The service combines the performance and scalability of Google's cloud with advanced security and sharing capabilities.

On June 1st and 2nd, thousands of developers from across the U.S. came together at nearly 100 different locations to participate in the first ever National Day of Civic Hacking. Using public data recently released by the government on topics like crime, health and the environment, developers built new applications that help address social challenges.


At the Googleplex in Mountain View, we hosted nearly 100 developers, statisticians, data scientists, and designers, who stayed long into the night hacking together prototypes that show how data on health and the environment can be used to enrich lives. Fusion Tables and Google App Engine were used to prototype, and groups relied on BigQuery as a workhorse to crunch the biggest datasets. Participants used Google+ Hangouts to connect with hackathons in other states and collaborated with Google Apps and platforms.

Here are a few highlights from the hackathon that stood out as useful, visually stunning, and informative ways to use public data:
  • Eat Healthy for Less, the winner of our Mountain View hackathon, is a mobile web application that uses the Consumer Pricing Index to suggest healthy recipes that can be made on a budget.
  • Data+, a reimagining of how we access data, can make exploring public datasets more intuitive and easily understandable for everyone.
  • Detoxic.org is a web experience and Android app that shows you toxic sites and landfills nearby that you might not know about so that you can take civic action against toxic waste.
Many of the ideas have great potential, and we are encouraging participants to continue their work. We hope that the National Day of Civic Hacking will be a catalyst for innovation in this space, and encourage you to keep track of our tools for civic developers at g.co/civicdevelopers.

Let's take a quick look at the individual sections in the Google Webmaster Tools' Site Performance feature:

Performance overview



The performance overview shows a graph of the aggregated speed numbers for the website, based on the pages that were most frequently accessed by visitors who use the Google Toolbar with the PageRank feature activated. By using data from Google Toolbar users, you don't have to worry about us testing your site from a location that your users do not use. For example, if your site is in Germany and all your users are in Germany, the chart will reflect the load time as seen in Germany. Similarly, if your users mostly use dial-up connections (or high-speed broadband), that would be reflected in these numbers as well. If only a few visitors of your site use the Google Toolbar, we may not be able to show this data in Webmaster Tools.

The line between the red and the green sections on the chart is the 20th percentile — only 20% of the sites we check are faster than this. This website is pretty close to the 20% mark, which pages would we have to work on first?

Example pages with load times



In this section you can find some example pages along with the average, aggregated load times that users observed while they were on your website. These numbers may differ from what you see as they can come from a variety of different browsers, internet connections and locations. This list can help you to recognize pages which take longer than average to load — pages that slow your users down.

As the page load times are based on actual accesses made by your users, it's possible that it includes pages which are disallowed from crawling. While Googlebot will not be able to crawl disallowed pages, they may be a significant part of your site's user experience.

Keep in mind that you may see occasional spikes here, so it's recommended that you watch the load times over a short period to see what's stable. If you consistently see very large load times, that probably means that most of your users are seeing very slow page loads (whether due to slow connections or otherwise), so it's something you should take seriously.

Page Speed suggestions



These suggestions are based on the Page Speed Firefox / Firebug plugin. In order to find the details for these sample URLs, we fetch the page and all its embedded resources with Googlebot. If we are not able to fetch all of embedded content with Googlebot, we may not be able to provide a complete analysis. Similarly, if the servers return slightly modified content for Googlebot than they would for normal users, this may affect what is shown here. For example, some servers return uncompressed content for Googlebot, similar to what would be served to older browsers that do not support gzip-compressed embedded content (this is currently the case for Google Analytics' "ga.js").

When looking at flagged issues regarding common third-party code such as website analytics scripts, one factor that can also play a role is how wide-spread these scripts are on the web. If they are common across the web, chances are that the average user's browser will have already cached the DNS lookup and the content of the script. While these scripts will still be flagged as separate DNS lookups, in practice they might not play a strong role in the actual load time.

We offer these suggestions as a useful guideline regarding possible first performance improvement steps and recommend using the Page Speed plugin (or a similar tool) directly when working on your website. This allows you to better recognize the blocking issues and makes it easy to see how modifications on the server affect the total load time.

Everyone who uses the web knows how frustrating it is to land on a page that sounds promising in the search results but ends up being useless when you visit it. We work hard to make sure Google’s algorithms catch as much as possible, but sometimes spammy sites still make it into search results. We appreciate the numerous spam reports sent in by users like you who find these issues; the reports help us improve our search results and make sure that great content is treated accordingly. Good spam reports are important to us. Here’s how to maximize the impact of any spam reports you submit:

Why report spam to Google?

Google’s search quality team uses spam reports as a basis for further improving the quality of the results that we show you, to provide a level playing field for webmasters, and to help with our scalable spam fighting efforts. With the release of new tools like our Chrome extension to report spam, we’ve seen people filing more spam reports and we have to allocate appropriate resources to the spam reports that are mostly likely to be useful.

Spam reports are prioritized by looking at how much visibility a potentially spammy site has in our search results, in order to help us focus on high-impact sites in a timely manner. For instance, we’re likely to prioritize the investigation of a site that regularly ranks on the first or second page over that of a site that only gets a few search impressions per month. A spam report for a page that is almost never seen by users is less likely to be reviewed compared to higher-impact pages or sites. We generally use spam reports to help improve our algorithms so that we can not only recognize and handle this particular site, but also cover any similar sites. In a few cases, we may additionally choose to immediately remove or otherwise take action on a site.

Which sites should I report?

We love seeing reports about spammy sites that our algorithms have missed. That said, it’s a poor use of your time to report sites that are not spammy. Sites submitted through the spam report form are reviewed for spam content only. Sites that you think should be tackled for other reasons should be submitted to us through the appropriate channels: for example, for those that contain content which you have removed, use our URL removal tools; for sites with malware, use the malware report form; for paid links that you find on sites, use the paid links reporting form. If you want to report spammy links for a page, make sure that you read how to report linkspam. If you have a complaint because someone is copying your content, we have a different copyright process--see our official documentation pages for more info. There’s generally no need to report sites with technical problems or parked domains because these are typically handled automatically.

The same applies to redirecting legitimate sites from one top level domain to another, e.g. example.de redirecting to example.com/de. As long as the content presented is not spammy, the technique of redirecting one domain to another does not automatically violate the Google Webmaster Guidelines.


If you happen to come across a gibberish site similar to this one, it’s most likely spam.

The best way to submit a compelling spam report is to take a good look at the website in question and compare it against the Google Webmaster Guidelines. For instance, these would be good reasons to report a site through the spam report form:
  • the cached version contains significantly different (often keyword-rich) content from the live version
  • you’re redirected to a completely different domain with off-topic, commercial content
  • the site is filled with auto-generated or keyword-stuffed content that seems to make no sense
These are just a few examples of techniques that might be potentially spammy, and which we would appreciate seeing in the form of a spam report. When in doubt, please feel free to discuss your concerns on the Help Forum with other users and Google guides.

What should I include in a spam report?

Some spam reports are easier to understand than others; having a clear and easy-to-understand report makes it much easier for us to analyze the issue and take appropriate actions. Here are some things to keep in mind when submitting the spam report:
  • Submit the URLs of the pages where you see spam (not just the domain name). This makes it easy for us to verify the problem on those specific pages.
  • Try to specify the issue as clearly as possible using the checkboxes. Don’t just check every single box--such reports are less likely to be reviewed.
  • If only a part of the page uses spammy techniques, for example if it uses cloaking or has hidden text on an otherwise good page, provide a short explanation on how to look for the spam you’re seeing. If you’re reporting a site for spammy backlinks rather than on-page content, mention that.
By following these guidelines, your spam reports will be reproducible and clear, making them easier to analyze on our side.

What happens next?

After reviewing the feedback from these reports (we want to confirm that the reported sites are actually spammy, not just sites that someone didn’t like), it may take a bit of time before we update our algorithms and a change is visible in the search results. Keep in mind that sometimes our algorithms may already be treating those techniques appropriately; for instance, perhaps we’re already ignoring all the hidden text or the exchanged links that you have reported. Submitting the same spam report multiple times is not necessary. Rest assured that we actively review spam reports and take appropriate actions, even if the changes are not immediately visible to you.

Today, we want to share with the web community some of the best practices we've used and developed over the years, by open-sourcing Page Speed.

Page Speed is a tool we've been using internally to improve the performance of our web pages -- it's a Firefox Add-on integrated with Firebug. When you run Page Speed, you get immediate suggestions on how you can change your web pages to improve their speed. For example, Page Speed automatically optimizes images for you, giving you a compressed image that you can use immediately on your web site. It also identifies issues such as JavaScript and CSS loaded by your page that wasn't actually used to display the page, which can help reduce time your users spend waiting for the page to download and display.

Page Speed's suggestions are based on a set of commonly accepted best practices that we and other websites implement. To help you understand the suggestions and rules, we have created detailed documentation to describe the rationale behind each of the rules. The default rule is "index, follow" -- this is used if you omit this tag entirely or if you specify content="all." As a side-note, you can now also specify this information in the header of your pages using the "X-Robots-Tag" HTTP header directive. This is particularly useful if you wish to fine-tune crawling and indexing of non-HTML files like PDFs, images or other kinds of documents.

When we recognize that the contents of a page are not in the language that the user is likely to want to read, we often provide a link in the search results to an automatic translation of your page. By using this meta tag, you can signal that you do not wish for Google to provide a link to a translation for this page. This Google webmaster tools-specific meta tag is used on the top-level page of your site to verify ownership of a site in webmaster tools (alternatively you may upload an HTML file to do this). The content value you put into this tag is provided to you in your webmaster tools account. Please note that while the contents of this meta tag (including upper and lower case) must match exactly what is provided to you, it does not matter if you change the tag from XHTML to HTML or if the format of the tag matches the format of your page. This meta tag defines the content-type and character set of the page. When using this meta tag, make sure that you surround the value of the content attribute with quotes; otherwise the charset attribute may be interpreted incorrectly. If you decide to use this meta tag, it goes without saying that you should make sure that your content is actually in the specified character set. "Google Webauthoring Statistics" has interesting numbers on the use of this meta tag.

This meta tag sends the user to a new URL after a certain amount of time, sometimes used as a simple form of redirection. This kind of redirect is not supported by all browsers and can be confusing to the user. If you need to change the URL of a page as it is shown in search engine results, we recommended that you use a server-side 301 redirect instead. Additionally, W3C's "Techniques and Failures for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0" lists it as being deprecated.

(X)HTML and Capitalization
Google can read both HTML and XHTML-style meta tags (regardless of the code used on the page). In addition, upper or lower case is generally not important in meta tags -- we treat <TITLE> and <title> equally. The "verify-v1" meta tag is an exception, it's case-sensitive.

revisit-after Sitemap lastmod and changefreq
Occasionally webmasters needlessly include "revisit-after" to encourage a search engine's crawl schedule, however this meta tag is largely ignored. If you want to give search engines information about changes in your pages, use and submit an XML sitemap. In this file you can specify the last-modified date and the change-frequency of the URLs on your site.

Earlier this year we announced a limited pilot for Search Engine Optimization reports in Google Analytics, based on Search queries data from Webmaster Tools. Thanks to valuable feedback from our pilot users, we’ve made several improvements and are pleased to announce that the following reports are now publicly available in the Traffic Sources section of Google Analytics.
  • Queries: impressions, clicks, position, and CTR info for the top 1,000 daily queries
  • Landing Pages: impressions, clicks, position, and CTR info for the top 1,000 daily landing pages
  • Geographical Summary: impressions, clicks, and CTR by country
All of these Search Engine Optimization reports offer Google Analytics’ advanced filtering and visualization capabilities for deeper data analysis. With the secondary dimensions, you can view your site’s data in ways that aren’t available in Webmaster Tools.


To enable these Search Engine Optimization reports for a web property, you must be both a Webmaster Tools verified site owner and a Google Analytics administrator of that Property. Once enabled, administrators can choose which profiles can see these reports.

  • Technology, innovation, computer science, & more: A VC panel - This year was the first time that we had investors/VCs speaking at I/O. Albert Wenger, Chris Dixon, Dave McClure, Paul Graham, Brad Feld, and Dick Costolo (moderator) debated hot tech topics including betting on start-ups with non-technical founders and open vs closed platforms.

Fireside Chats:

In the 9 fireside chats at I/O this year, Google teams were eager to talk about the latest ongoings with their respective product areas, as well as spend most of the time on audience Q&A.

This year, we decided to record fireside chats because we know how popular they are not just with I/O attendees, but everyone interested in hearing from the engineers behind our products. You can find videos for the fireside chats below:

seo How to change Blogger's default Template. 2013

Blogger's worst thing you may have noticed is its years-old templates. The dashboard has been revised but the templates remains same. However, with time, there has been hundreds of third party templates designed and released for free to blogger.com users. These third party templates needs to be manually uploaded to blogger.com. Here is a quick tutorial to change your bloggers default template.
 

▌ Go to Blogger Dashboard > Template

▌Select Backup / Restore option from the right hand side upper corner of the template dashboard.

▌ Download full template before uploading any third party template. You don't want anything wrong with your already developed blog, so keeping a backup is always a necessary thing.

▌ Now, browse through your PC and select the template you wanna upload. The template will be uploaded. 


How to customize your already applied Template: 

▌ Go to Blogger Dashboard > Template. Select Customize. 

▌ Blogger Template Designer is open. Now you can adjust Widths, size, Background Images, Templates Fonts and many more. 


If you know HTML and javascripts, you can manually modify your site's design by going to 
Blogger Dashboard > Templates > Edit HTML. 

Important: Don't forget to keep a backup of your template before making any change. Always preview your template if you edit its HTML source, if its loading correctly, you are in right direction, else, you need to revert changes.

seo Google Wave @ Google I/O 2013

Seo Master present to you: The high point of presenting Google Wave at I/O? The joy of seeing crazy smart developers react to the product and technology as we showed it publicly for the first time. The low point? Typing twephanie's Twitter password in clear text on the big screen (luckily, a team member reset it before anything questionable happened!). We had the chance to continue the Google Wave conversations through breakout sessions, which we are happy to now make available in the Google I/O series of videos now available online, and in office hours with the engineering team.

Douwe Osinga kicked off the series with a deep dive into the Google Wave APIs using demos and code samples to show how waves can be embedded into other sites as well as how to extend Wave with both client- and server-side code. After the wow of the chess gadget and the 'Rosy' robot demos during the keynote, developers flocked to the Programming with and for Google Wave session to learn how to start building extensions themselves. Notice how Douwe's good humor persevered through even tougher network problems than we had in the keynote.

The next session, Google Wave: Under the Hood, focused on core technologies behind Google Wave, diving into the heavy lifting we did in platform design to make it simple for developers to build concurrent applications. David Wang introduced the technology stack behind Google Wave's real-time collaboration and concurrency controls followed by an explanation of the operational transformation algorithms by Alex Mah. Dan Danilatos explained how the AJAX editor renders wave content and sends and receives fine-grained changes down to the level of keystrokes. Finally, Casey Whitelaw unveiled the natural language processing magic behind 'Spelly' our context-sensitive spelling system.

In the third and final session, Adam Schuck outlined the team's experience using Google Web Toolkit to build the Google Wave client. Adam went from GWT skeptic to zealous GWT advocate over the course of building Google Wave. In his talk, Adam covered some recent advances in GWT which enabled Google Wave to look and feel like a desktop application with comparable performance. He also discussed the use of WebDriver (an automated web testing tool) which is integral to the project's success.

seo Android: Now beaming I/O videos and presentations to the world 2013

Seo Master present to you: Google I/O was one of Android's biggest events of the year, with a Mobile track that focused primarily on all things Android, and 22 developers showcasing some of their great Android applications at the Google I/O developer sandbox.

For those of you who missed I/O or could not make all the Android sessions, we're excited to release session videos and presentations from the Mobile track online and free to developers worldwide.

At this year's I/O, we wanted to help developers further optimize their applications for the Android platform by creating better user experiences. Romain Guy explored techniques for making Android apps faster and more responsive using the UI toolkit. Chris Nesladek discussed the use of interaction design patterns in the Android system framework to create an optimal user experience. Since mobile application development is inextricably tied to battery performance, Jeff Sharkey provided an insightful look at the impact of different application features and functionalities on battery life. Taking the mobile experience further, T.V. Raman and Charles Chen discussed building applications that are optimized for eyes-busy environments, taking advantage of the Text-to-Speech library, as well as new UI innovations that allow a user to interface with the device without needing to actually look at the screen.

We also offered a few sessions on building compelling and fun apps that take advantage of the Android media framework and 2D and 3D graphic libraries. Chris Pruett discussed the gaming engine that he built and used as a case study to explain best practices and common pitfalls in building graphics-intensive applications. David Sparks lifted the hood on the infrastructure by diving into Android's multimedia capabilities and expanding on how to use them to write secure and battery-efficient media code.

We also had several sessions that meditate on challenges, best practices, and philosophies for writing apps for Android. Dan Morrill demonstrated multiple techniques for developing apps for Android in different scenarios, to help developers make the right decisions on the right techniques for writing their apps. Joe Onorato talked to developers about leveraging Android's ability to support multiple hardware configurations to make their applications run on a wide variety of devices without the overhead of building a custom version for each. Justin Mattson talked about advanced usage of Android debugging tools in his session and presented real-world examples in which these tools were used at Google.

Lastly, Robert Kroeger returns from the frontlines of launching Gmail Mobile Web for iPhone and Android's offline capabilities and shares the team's experiences in using a portable write-through caching layer running on either HTML 5 or Gears databases to build offline-capable web applications.

In other words do your research so that you can start your blog with some solid concepts.
