seo A day for respite 2013

Seo Master present to you:
What can be more fun than playing pranks with kids and friends in four-feet deep water, with your feet dipped in soft mud? Well, eating the fresh Hilsa fish from the great Padma river, of course!
At the Padma Resort you can swim back to your childhood fun, plus have great food. Located in a shoal on the mighty Padma river in Louhajang, the Padma Resort was developed by Mohammad Ali, a local businessman only two years back. The number of resorts where you can make a day trip with your family and have solid fun is very few. The Padma Resort is one such latest addition to the rare kind.
You might want to spend a night there, or just drive back home in the evening. The resort attracts a good number of tourists from locality as well as from Dhaka.
Reaching this resort takes about a one-hour drive from Dhaka, through the old Dhaka, via Keraniganj connected by a bridge and straight to Louhajang. The road condition is fairly good and the traffic flow is relatively thin on Fridays. Once you reach Louhajang, you can see signboards indicating to the direction of the resort.
The direction will take you to a small jetty where you will take a short boat ride to the resort on a shoal across a narrow strip of the Padma river.
The resort was built on the shallow part of the river on the shoal. About a dozen duplex wooden cottages built on pillars and connected by a long unbroken wooden balcony provide residential facilities complete with fresh water supplies in the toilets and electricity.
The main stream of the wild Padma river is on the other side of the shoal. The birth of the shoal has divided a side of the Padma leaving a 250-feet wide "narrow" strip of river. The shoal is all green with paddy and wild grass and it's a home for many farmers.
After you toss your baggage in one of the cabins, which are reasonably priced, you might get into something more water-friendly-- because its no fun if you don't get wet here. The resort has hordes of rafts. If you don't know how to swim-- relax, there are plenty of lifejackets for you and your kids. Plus, you have the choice to have fun in the water within the inner perimeter of the resort or in the "narrow" strip of the Padma.
The resort people will discourage you to go to the main river on the raft, as the Padma can be too strong for a safe ride.
Whether you play water polo in the waters inside or outside the resort area, it's solid fun and safe as long as you are sticking to a 5-feet deep zone. The muddy riverbed in the outer perimeter of the resort can be very thick-- and it might spook you a bit. But it's safe.
When you are done with the water sports, you will experience hunger like no other time. The resorts cafeteria, also on a wide wooden platform supported by stilts, is where you grab great food -- including fresh Hilsa.
If you are looking for a quick holiday break with friends and family, give the Padma Resort a try.

seo Watch your Natural Discovery Channel 2013

Seo Master present to you:
THE first thing you will probably get to know about Lawachhara reserve forest is it is a place where the film "Around the World in 80 Days" by Michael Todd was shot.
The forest lies northeast of Srimongol, Sylhet. It is one of the three moist forests left in Bangladesh and invites you to explore and discover. Leave the main road from Srimongol and enter the reserve forest through a bumpy brick road that guides to the forest department office and the railway line.
Budget
Participants must reach Dublar Char at least two days before the festival. Tourists may hire boats from Mongla, but they have to take permission from the forest department. Our advice is to go with the tour operators. Guide Tours Ltd and Bengal Tours operate trips to the festival from Dhaka. The cost for a four-day trip including accommodation, transport, food and guide would be between Tk 5,000 and Tk 4,500 per person.
Thingstocarry
Light-soled shoes Warm cloths Sun screen lotion Sunglasses Sun hat Binoculars Insect repellant Flashlight Camera gears
We cross the rail track at the very shooting place of "Around the World in 80 days", follow the obviously often used path leading into denser woods. Shortly afterwards, we leave the trail, choosing the first small path heading left, northwards. Prominently, a teak tree stands exposed, close to our way through the dark greens. Rays of sunlight enter, dispersed by the Civit and Garnary tree canopy. Like tiny spots, they sparkle on spider webs, some old, some being woven at that very moment, horizontally over the path.
We have been following the path for less than a kilometer. Before us, a small creek spreads over the path. Sediments color its water reddish. Tadpoles lazily hang in the shallows, some dragonflies buzz over the pond. On the soft mud, we find footprints of a civet cat.
Continuing our exploration, we hold right to the next fork as the path gets narrower. Dew keeps on dropping on our heads, leaving a dotted pattern on the sand. Imprints of human feet remind us of people frequently entering the forest, exploiting its resources.
We find interesting types of spiders on the trail. One, we discovered, had two long backward pointing horns in the rear. When pointing downwards, they look like balance stick artists on the rope. But when pointing upwards, they resemble enormous scorpion stingers. In the dewy morning air, butterflies flutter or take sun-bath. Termites have built colonies along tree trunks, making intricate patterns.
From further away, a gibbon family suddenly starts screaming at their top of voice. Lawachhara forest is one of the rare places where white-browed gibbons still can be seen in the wild. Three groups of about 20 gibbons live here, among other monkeys and lagurs. But for the moment, they would not show up. Invisible as they are, it seems that the forest department has rather set up a surround sound effect to fool the visitors.
Following the path, we approach a different tune, getting louder and louder. An alarm clock? A cell phone? Beeping constantly loud and high, almost painful to our ears. Crickets. We leave the "natural noise" behind us. Suddenly, we hear a ruffle above us. Quickly, a black fur appears between leaves and branches, just to disappear again: A rare orange-bellied Himalayan squirrel.
The trail carries on and we realise hours have passed.
The last thing you must know about Lawachhara forest is it is endangered. Deforestation continues and its treasures are getting depleted.

seo Riding The Snows 2013

Seo Master present to you:

It's an irresistible color, white. It tugs at the heartstring and beckons one to Himalayan heights every winter, the freezing cold notwithstanding. There is plenty you can do with the crisp white flakes as they descend lightly from the laden skies: just scoop them up in handfuls and play ball, and hop onto a sledge and let the sledge man run down the hill side with you, or put on a pair of skies and zoom down to slopes at 60 miles an hour.
Yes! If you're a real adventure freak and want to make fun on snows you don't need to spend too much going Switzerland, Austria or Denmark, you can just make it in our neighboring country India.
GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) has winterized suit visiting groups as well as pockets of all sizes. That's right it is just at your door step, it's all about Auli, the best of the very few places in India where skiing is major pastime. Auli is nestled in the lap of the snow-capped peaks of Garhwal Himalayas in the Chamoli District of Western Uttar Pradesh (Uttaranchal), near the world famous religious shrine of Badrinath & Kedarnath. It offers panoramic view of Himalayan peaks sweeping over 180 degrees including Mt. Nanda Devi, Mana Parbat, Dunagiri, Bithartoli, Hathi Parbat, and Gori Parbat. Realizing the potential of Auli as a ski-resort, the Government of U.P. had it surveyed by French and Australian experts, who favorably compared the slopes of Auli to be the best in the world. Although skiing is being enjoyed in Kashmir, Shimla and Manali in India, Auli has been considered the best of its kind even in the Asia. Apart from skiing festivals that are held here since 1986, National Championship under the aegis of Winter Game Federation of India has been held at Auli in March every year. What catalyzed my travel plan was the 5th National Skiing Championship (March 1-3, 2005). I have been so lucky of having the opportunity to take part as a layperson in the festival held this year. The events included Alpine and Nordic skiing with a lot of other funs made by hundreds of experts and amateurs. Toddlers were not deprived of the dazzling charm of skiing; they enjoyed it sitting in the middle of bucket.
Let's have a look into the route map of reaching Auli from Bangladesh. One can take a direct bus trip to Kolkata from Dhaka and then to Delhi by train. Super fast Rajdhana Express is available every day which leaves Hawra at 4.15 p.m and reaches New Delhi next day in the morning at 9.30 a.m. A.C. 3 tier will cost you Rs. 1500 and A.C. 2 tier Rs. 2200 respectively including evening snacks with tea and coffee, delicious veg or nonveg dinner followed by desert and bed tea with breakfast. Getting reservation in Rajdhani Express is not very difficult in foreigner's quota if you show your Passport and Dollar exchange receipt. One can also fly direct to New Delhi by Air. Your next destination is Haridwar a famous holy place in India. Dehradun Express (Up) leaves Old Delhi junction every night at 10.15 p.m. and reaches Haridwar next morning at 6.30 a.m. You can avail return trip to Delhi by the same train Dehradun Express (down) which leaves Haridwar for Delhi at 10.30 p.m regularly. Auli is only 296 k.m. away from Haridwar. But reaching Auli is not very easy; again it is not very difficult too. This 296 k.m. crisscross and up n down hill motor drive is a bit risky. A minute mistake of the driver may risk your life and you cannot be rescued up from 2000-4000 m downhill. It is wise not to be motorized if it is raining. However despite the risky part of the journey this 10 hours long drive will bring you a breath-taking experience of adventure and thrill of motor riding in deep hilly forest. The pristine natural beauty in addition to alpine atmosphere temples with abundance of fresh air and tranquil environs lure many a tourist. Buses and Tata Somus are awaiting for Joshimath leaves the terminal in every half an hour from 5.30a.m. to 9.30 a.m. at Rs.200 -300. Remember that you have to ensure getting on a bus between 5 .30 9.30 a.m. otherwise you cannot reach Joshimath (the nearest stoppage to Auli) before sunset. If you are late, you're under risk since it is a 10 hours long journey bus which leaves after 9.30 a.m. usually end its drive by the dusk anywhere in between Devprayag (a spectacular hill station where the film KISHNA has been picturized) to Joshimath. Problem is to find out a good hotel anywhere other than Joshimath where hotels and resorts are available. A double bed ranges from Rs. 300 600 including hot & cold water supply which is indispensably required because Auli is even very cold in summer. In winter the frizzing temperature will force you wearing have woolen jackets. Hotels are not very luxurious but livable. Some good hotels and resorts are underway. You can also check in the Official Resort of Auli, Cliff Top Club which has been operated by GMVN. But you must require a prior reservation from any tour operating agencies even in off pick season. The Cliff Top resort has a central heating system imported from Czechoslovakia. Chase the opportunity any how because this is the only place from where you can enjoy a birds eye view of the snow, the scenic beauty of Gharwal Himalayas as well as other impressive events around you. If you're unfortunate you have to stay overnight in Joshimath. In that case don't forget to get a wakeup call by 5.30 a.m. The dawn will open up a whole new world to you at Auli. It is only 13 k.m. by road from Joshimat can be traveled by a hired jeep. But the stretch between Joshimath and Auli has been blocked due to heavy snowfall most of the time in winter. Nevertheless the best and the most popular way to drop in Auli is by 3.9 k.m. rope way (cable car). Which operates from 7.30 a.m to 6.30 p.m and a round trip will be charged Rs. 200. The trekking distance from Joshimath to Auli is only 4.15 k.m.
Now you're at Asia's longest ropeway in zig-back system imported from Austria in 1990s. The ropeway connecting Joshimath with the upper slopes of Auli is upheld by 10 towers of self-supporting steel structures. Remote controlled hydraulic and pneumatic banking systems make it the safest possible ropeway. Besides, the most sophisticated electronic circuitry with telemetry and storm warning devices are used to minimize human error. As the cable car moved deeper into the domain of huge white peaks, the ground below you change from green to green-and-white to absolute white. It takes only 15 minutes to reach the 8th tower and surprisingly you will find yourself on a white carpet and you're free to wander all around the snow. The gentlest slopes, with runs up to 200m are ideal for beginners while comparatively steep runs of 500m are for intermediate level skiers. The pros, on the other hand, would like to check out the precipitous 2000m stretches, many of which lie in the quiet outside a busy T-bar. The equipment can be hired at a state-run ski shop in Joshimath or Auli and locals, who have taken advanced training in the sport should be willing to teach you for Rs 150- 200 per day. A complete set of equipment skis, sticks, gloves, jackets, boots and goggles, come for Rs 250 per day. You can also get enrolled in 7-days non-certificate course having 25 seats or a 14-days module which is a certificate course having 15 seats conducted from Jan March. Your next surprising Dhamaka is Heli-skiing. A helicopter is used to take advanced skiers up to Apherwat peak from where they could choose their descent route. Otherwise a four hour uphill trek, it takes only 20 minutes to descend from Apherwat. But this limited facility is available (Rs. 1000 per trip) at the time of National Skiing Championship. The slopes of Auli also have the luxury of an 800-m long Chair Lift, linking the lower slopes with upper slopes.
Visualize this: the Nanda Devi towering above you while you are skiing down a 20km snow-clad slope from a height of 2500m to 3050m.s does the picture excite your imagination? Learning ski is actually not very difficult as I discovered the fact few years back when I had my 1st skiing course at Kufri in India, though mastering the art requires dedication. The GMVN maintains the slopes aided by two snow-beater machines imported from Germany, which ensure that the slopes are always well dressed. Both sides of the slopes are covered with oak and coniferous trees that break the speed of the wind and this makes it ideal for skiing. The cross country runs of 10-20 km with added advantage of fresh snow from crisscrossing streams, tearing down the snowlines of the European Alps. You have whole the day left for skiing but in winter snowfall stars by evening. Still some snow lovers continued riding and you can take chance too; as I did, believe me it was an entirely new experience one should not miss.
So! Don't get delayed, pack your haversack and rock n roll to the Himalayan Alps, The Auli. The best time to visit Auli is from December to March but snows lasts till late June. Auli sure has something to offer to all, whether to seek a respite from hustle and bustle of the city life or conquering the challenging heights of the glorious peaks.
The slanted rays of the sun change their hues in sync. They acquire a rosy tinge before fading away in the dusk. The nazara will leave an indelible impression on your minds, calling you back to Auli when the snows return.

seo The island of paradise 2013

Seo Master present to you:

We were now off to St Martin's Island on our third and last leg of the coastal treat. The ship sailed on time but we had a bit of a problem with the cabin. The ship's crew had sold the same cabin twice to us and to another group. And now the crewmembers were nowhere in the scene as chaos erupted. Finally, with the shouting and hollering, they appeared tentatively and opened the cabin for us.
However, we had little use of the room other than dumping our bags there. Then we were on the deck. The ship passed by the Myanmarese trawlers moored at the fish landing port. These trawlers were specially shaped with front leaning cabins. The fishing crews were cooking rice, we could see from this far. Some were just hanging out and gazing us down.
You get a beautiful sight of Teknaf as the ship coasts along the Naf river channel. The broken hills frill all the way to the sea and the bitumen road looks beautiful. Cars like toys roll up and down it. We passed the forest rest house where we had stayed the night before. We could see the Arakan hills from a short distance. The Myanmar coast is mostly derelict except some dispersed structures. We saw a beautiful pink pagoda. A few two-storey structures, may be some office buildings. The paddy patches shone in the morning sun like gold plated shields.
For a long time, we could see the Bangladesh coast, and we started wondering if there was indeed a land bridge to the island and we were on this ship just for the heck of it. Later, we came to know that the gap between Bangladesh coast and the island is not really that big, only about 9km, and some young men had even swum across to St Martin's.
But then the coast ceased to exist and we were onto the open sea. We passed by a beautiful island belonging to Myanmar. The leaning coconut trees, the beach and the forest made it look like paradise. Only there were no human beings on it, as we could see through binoculars.
A little later the sea started changing colour and St Martin's came into view. The water was now turquoise green. And we could spot the red tiles of the environment department bungalows where we would stay. The coastguard building looked the tallest structure.
The ship's engine slowed down to a throbbing speed as the master pulled the strings to ring the signal bell in the engine room. The island was appearing bigger and bigger by the minute. And then there was the pier. It took quite some maneuverings for the ship to moor.
We crossed the pier and were immediately on the beach, trotting down towards the bungalows. It was an amazing walk -- the green gently lapping on our left, revealing thousands of corals, and the high wall of Kewra plantation on our right. A few brilliantly painted trawlers danced on the waves.
The resort itself was a breathtaking spot. It is on the narrow chicken neck part of the island. On both sides of it are the sea -- we could see the sandy beach in front of our bungalow and a coral beach in the back. The waves broke on the corals in huge splashes and the waves gently murmured on the sandy beach, creating a symphony of sounds. We got on to the roof of the observation centre to get a better view of the island. In the afternoon light, we could see both ends of the about 7-km long island. A truly tranquil sight, something out of this world.
Away in the sea floats a huge navy ship, its gun turrets looking like some matchsticks against the blue sky. There were some huge iron poles lying mangled on the resort premise. Later, we came to know that these were windmills that broke down during the Sidr.
In the afternoon, we walked to the northern tip of the island to the 'regular' beach where tourists flock. The fishing trawlers were mooring one by one and consignments of fish were being unloaded on to the beach. Huge sharks and stingrays were being hacked into pieces. A villager told us that dried shark is in huge demand among the indigenous people in Teknaf.
We spent the afternoon on the beach and watched the sun set into the emerald sea in a sudden plunge. Green and pink made an evanescent moment of glory. Slowly we trotted headed back to the coast guard office where the officials had a treat for us -- fish and chicken barbecue on the beach. We sat on deck chairs and watched a huge moon break over the sea and flood the entire island with a fairy glow. The navy ship was still there, its lights shining brightly. The green water had now turned gold. Sitting under the coconut trees, we watched the marvel of the island.
..................................................................
Later, much later, I pulled the door behind as I quietly left the bungalow and walked on the beach, by the kewra plantation further south towards Chhera Dwip. The trawlers were all there, shiny under the full moon. But after about two kilometers, I had to stop. A channel has entered into the island from the sea. During low tide it is okay, but now it is full with water.
I had to turn back to the bungalow. It was already too late and tomorrow we would have an exciting thing waiting for us.

seo Long walk to Keokradang 2013

Seo Master present to you: The most charming adventure tour in Bangladesh is to explore Keokradang, the highest peak of the country. Our team consisted of only two persons -- Rahul and I. So the tour was more of an adventure for us. Many suggested us not to go on this venture, but defied them one by one.

We started our journey to Ruma ghat (terminal) from Bandarban on a 'Chander Gari,' a jalopy made of an age-old jeep. We were on the roof of the Chander Gari. What an exciting scene around us! The clouds were flying beneath us. It seemed that we are flying over the clouds like a free bird. Sometimes the clouds were so close that we felt that we could reach out and touch them.

Ruma Ghat is only 54km from the town, but the journey took about three and a half hours. Here we had to cross the Shankha river on a one and a half hours' trip to Ruma Bazaar. We found three or four rest houses at Ruma Bazaar and we picked the one near the police station to stay.

The feeling at Ruma Bazaar is that you are being enclosed by four walls on all sides the walls are hills as we were at the bosom of a valley. In the afternoon, I suddenly felt very lonely without any real reason. The silence of the place and the hills around us might have induced the lonely feeling.

After resting that day, we start our journey the next morning for Boga Lake. From here on it is walking all the way. As we plodded along, we heard the hills children calling to us: Mu Mu. Our local guide said it means "where is our tiffin?" We dug into our bags and handed them some chocolates. In return, the children gave us wide grins.
The way to Baga Lake is no pleasure trip, for a normal tourist, it might be even impossible to walk for five hours without rest. You have to walk along the hilly river Rumanaksang and cross it several times.
Just after Ruma Bazaar and before Boga Lake, there are two steep hills and path strewn with stones. We had to cross the shallow river 52 times more. We had to cross a stream to go up a small hill, the stony way of the stream is too narrow to walk side by side. Although we enjoyed the climb, but I was frightened a little to see the stony way.
On the way, we met many indigenous people who walked along the way without any ease. A Murang boy said, "Practice makes it easy for us."
At last, we were relieved to have reached Boga Lake. We found two rest houses and an army camp. Another team of travellers had already booked the army rest house, so we took over a private rest house.
The villagers of Boga Lake cordially accept tourists and entertain them in exchange for a little money. The people here are mainly Marma, Murang and Bome. They are very friendly with the Bangalis. At the rest house, we were served with excellent Bangali food with red rice grown in the hills.
These areas are deprived of many facilities, from Ruma Bazaar to Boga Lake, we found only one primary school established with the help of some tourists.

Next morning, we set out for Darjiling Para. It is a two-hour walk from Boga Lake. The path is better than the one we covered the previous day. Darjiling Para is the second most elevated habitation of Bangladesh; Shaikat Para is the first. There are few small shops at Darjiling Para. We relaxed and looked through the shops, as we knew we were close to Keokradang. After that, only half an hour's walk took us to the peak.

How did we feel? It is impossible to describe the ecstasy of watching the beauty around us.

seo Nepal: our dream years! 2013

Seo Master present to you:

Every time I read and hear about Nepal, a sense of overwhelming nostalgia comes over. I am transported to that beautiful land that reclines so gracefully against the majestic Sagarmatha, the Himalayas, as we all know, in turn melt visually into the sky. Now and then that peak at the pinnacle, or Machepucheri – the fishtail or the other grand peaks become visible to the adoring eyes of the people of Nepal and the visitors alike.

I have had the singular privilege of serving in the Kingdom of Nepal as the Bangladesh Ambassador for a somewhat unusually long period of five years. These were some of the very best years of my life and this had given me, as a bonus, an opportunity to become the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps for over a year.
I arrived in Nepal from London in June 1990 just a few months after the Jana Andolan, which brought about a fundamental constitutional change by allowing a multi-party democratic dispension for the country. With His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev as the constitutional monarch, an interim Government was in place with the well respected senior Nepali Congress leader Mr. Krishna Prasad Bharrarai as the Prime Minister.
At that time Nepal’s elder statesman Mr. Ganesh Man Singh considered to be the Father of Nepal’s Democracy was accorded high esteem by all the leaders and parties. Mr. Bhattarai’s interim Government was followed by the Nepali Congress government headed by another illustrious political name in Nepal, Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala whose elder brother B P Koirala was the first democratic Prime Minister of Nepal a few decades ago.
Another brother Mattrika Prasad Koirala had also served as a Prime Minister with King Mahendra on the throne. Perhaps, three brothers becoming Prime Minister like the Koiralas is a unique happening.
Mr. G P Koirala had to give up the power when the CPN-UML won the elections and the party’s revered leader Mr. Manmohan Adhikary became the first communist Prime Minister of the Kingdom with Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. After about two years, Nepali Congress returned to govern the country, with a relatively younger leader, who had proved his mettle as the Home Minister in Mr. GP Koirala’s Cabinet, Mr. Sher Bahadur Deuba winning the mantle of Prime Ministership.
It is on him and Mrs. Deuba, I and my wife went to make our farewell call in June 1995, as I was transferred from Kathmandu to Dhaka as a Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (only to leave after about six months as Bangladesh Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco).
In Nepal I had the privilege of having very close contact with all the four Prime Ministers and of course, all the Foreign Ministers and many members of the four successive cabinets. I was literally overwhelmed by the extraordinary kindness and courtesies I had personally received from all of them.
It was a most satisfying tour of duty for me with the expressions of deep friendship for Bangladesh and of respect and esteem for our Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and her first government that had also swept to power through the sheer force of popular will and demand in 1990. I was fortunate enough to be in an amazingly receptive as well as enabling environment both in my own country and in the country to which I was accredited.
Among the many significant successes that characterized Bangladesh -Nepal relations, there are outstanding milestones that as the Ambassador I especially recall with deep personal pride. First was the bilateral visit of our then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
This visit had brought out the very best in our relations and Nepal extended a most colourful, spontaneous and warm welcome through out her 3-day official visit. Prime Minister Koirala and his Government went all out to consolidate the friendly relations with respect and admiration for our Prime Minister. The second was also the visit to Nepal by Begum Zia.
This time as the SAARC Chairperson and her host was the elderly Communist Party leader Prime Minister Man Mohan Adhikary. The warmth shown and the heartiest welcome offered to our Prime Minister on this occasion was also exceptional. On both visits, His Majesty King Birendra received the honoured guest at the Palace in extended meetings.
I also recall that in the same Narayanhiti Palace, King Birendra had welcomed late President Ziaur Rahman on his last state visit to Nepal. The King, an admirer of SAARC offered rock-solid support to the continued expansion of the SAARC concept and to its fullest possible implementation. Begum Zia had accompanied her husband on that historic visit.
As the Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I had the privilege of being included in the Presidential entourage. And at that time, I could not have divined that I would have the distinct honour of representing my country in that capital and also have the rare privilege of receiving Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia twice on her official visits to the Kingdom.
Nor did I anticipate that I would have the distinction of being perhaps the first Bangladesh Ambassador to become the Dean of a Diplomatic Corps. As the Dean in Kathmandu,I took a unique initiative to arrange a grand Diplomatic Reception in honour of Their Majesties the King and the Queen to celebrate the Golden Jubilee in 1995.
Almost single-handedly the reception was meticulously arranged at the famed Yak & Yeti Hotel, when the Royal Protocol conveyed the gracious acceptance of my formal invitation as the Dean. The Corps deeply lauded the efforts put in and I was particularly indebted to all my colleagues in the Corps.
My Deputy the British Ambassador Timothy George, US Ambassador Sandy Vogelgesang and Daniel Du’Pont, the French Ambassador were particularly helpful in various ways. Daniel supplied the special favourites of the King – cigars ( Romeo & Juliet) and drinks, that the Palace had very kindly informed me about. I prevailed upon Yak & Yeti management to spend a significant amount of time and money on putting up a new Golden Door to the Reception Hall and to ensure perfect arrangements for this fabulous occasion. It was one of the rare events where there were six royal presence.
Their Majesties were accompanied by Crown Prince Deependra and Princess Sruti. We were overjoyed when His Royal Highnesses Prince Gyanendra and Princess Komol, (later themselves becoming the King and the Queen of Nepal), also graciously joined the reception. As the Dean I had to resolve the extremely sensitive issue of protocol in receiving the Royals and later to see them off.
While my wife and I naturally were at hand to receive King Birendra and Queen Aisharya, I had deputed Timothy George and his wife Rechenda to receive the Crown Prince and his sister Princess Sruti, and the US Ambassador Sandy Vogelgesang and her husband agreed to welcome Prince Gyanendra and Princess Komol.
I also recall the surprise we had when King Birenda came out not from the back of the royal limousine but from the driver’s seat and as I warmly welcomed them, with his usually pleasant smile remarked “Excellency, I thought I should try my driving skill once in a while.” Considering Narayanhiti Palace is just about a thousand yards away, this was a indeed a royal humour at its best The Reception was also attended by highly select invitees and excepting Mr. G. P. Koirala, who was out of the city at the time, then Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Mrs. Arzoo Deuba and two former Prime Ministers Mr. Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and Mr.Manmohan Adhikary and senior Cabinet members were all present.
After seeing off Their Majesties whose gracious words of appreciation I had later conveyed to the Corps, my wife and I could just return in time as HRH Prince Gyanendra and Princes Komol were ready to leave. The Prince was exceedingly kind in congratulating us on a memorable event, and he added, I recall, that ‘it was fit for a King’.
I praised him for his great success with the Kingdom’s work for preservation of its rich wildlife, especially in protecting the endangered species of Black Rhinos. He has been instrumental in this as the Royal Patron. and the project involved large-scale transfer of rhinos from the overused Chitwan forest to Royal Bardia Wildlife preserve in faraway western part of Nepal. Despite many problems, it is undeniable that Nepal has the most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries mainly due to such Royal patronage and interest.
I should mention about the wonderful expression of Nepal’s friendship for Bangladesh in this specific area. At my request, HM Government had donated two black rhinos for our Zoological Gardens in Dhaka. ‘Kancha’ and ‘Kanchi’, names had suggested to our authorities have been a fabulous attraction for people of all ages over all these years, obviously reminding the generous friendship of the Kingdom for Bangladesh.
There are so many memories worth recalling, but that I intend to do on another occasion. The reason for writing this article is to highlight the excellent bilateral relations that have been strengthened over the years between Bangladesh and Nepal. These relations are truly based on sovereign equality and mutual respect and on admiration for the institutions, practices and achievements in various spheres of respective national life. Political, social, economic and cultural values and progressive national endeavours in the two countries enable them to learn and draw inspirations from.
During my five years stay, I had travelled fairly extensively in Nepal reaching places in the remotest areas of this wonderful land. I have invariably been received with great warmth and kindness. my wife and I still recall with deep fondness these abiding gestures and the fabulous hospitality that we had enjoyed everywhere. Nepal with its respected leaders, its people from all walks of life, has become a part of our psyche, indeed a part of us.
II
For these very reasons, we also feel so very encouraged by the continuing genuine efforts in Nepal making the task of nation building so much more meaningful all around. The historic Jano Andolan, that brought about the democratic system for the welfare and progress of the people can only have full meaning with a peaceful understanding and mutual respect among the various groups representing legitimate interests and concerns of the people everywhere across the country.
The process of reaching for common welfare and unified efforts by the whole nation to travel on the path of progress and prosperity, is fraught with challenges. We as friends of Nepal, and many others, are hugely optimistic that for Nepal, so much sunshine is just around the corner.
With the world watching so very closely and when the concept and practice of democratic governance and the people’s rights have become global ‘mantras’ by which the super and big powers swear and sword-use in distant, may wish to consider to bring three basic elements in a proper equation:
(i) the democratic process that had taken roots since 1990 in a definitive manner should be allowed to bear new leaves and fruits, obviously through a somewhat rocky and rough passage
(ii) the concerns and demands of all sections of citizenry, who have proved, if nothing else, their deep and unrelenting commitment to the national cause, indicating a huge necessity for the authorities to have the wisdom and patience in the overall interest of the country, especially its needs to unite all and use all its resources, human and natural, abundant as they indeed are, to ensure the augury of a golden era in Nepal and
(iii) the smooth growth of the constitutional governance and the development of the appropriate institutions for the conduct of the affairs of the state. With the ideal fusion of emerging democratic traditions and due recognition of the hopes and aspirations of the people from all regions Nepal would soon play its rightful role.
As a friend of Nepal, I, and so many others, would wish to appeal to all to seize this window of opportunity to help usher in a great era that Nepal and its friendly people so richly deserve. Let the 21st Century and this South Asia region, witness a monumental achievement of the people, by the people and for the people.

If you think this post may help your friend then please don't forget to share with your facebook, twitter or google plus account. Thank you.

Ahshan Manzil
Ahsan Manzil located at Kumartoli of Dhaka at the bank of the Buriganga, used to be the refacetntial palace and the kachari of the Nawabs of Dhaka. It’s been turned into a museum recently. It used to be said to be the Rang Mahal of Sheikh Enayetullah, a Zamindar of Jamalpur pargana (Barisal) during the time of the Mughals. Having purchased it from his son Matiullah, the French made it their trading centre.
