Developers play a crucial role in making the Internet relevant for Africans. This is why fostering a vibrant African developer ecosystem is very important to Google. Developers and tech entrepreneurs from across the continent joined thousands of their peers from all over the world to explore the latest tech innovations at Google I/O 2013 in San Francisco. Several of them were members of the Google Developer Groups in countries such as Algeria, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Kenya, Republic of Congo, Togo and Uganda.

Remember AfriNolly – winner of 2011 Android developer competition? The app by Fans Connect Online now has over 2 million downloads across several platforms, with a new Android version support for 11 languages launched in May 2013. The Fans Connect Online team also ran a contest for African short films and created a radio show focused on the African film industry.

Creating applications and services that use Google platforms to make the internet more relevant to Africans is a big part of Google’s vision in Africa. This is why we are always excited whenever we come across individuals or companies whose efforts are in line with this vision. Here are a few of the interesting applications we have seen in recent months.

Battabox, co founded by Christian Purefoy and Yemisi Ilo, is an online social television platform developed in Nigeria that aims to provide everything Nigerian from music, film, street-life to news, comedy and cooking using the YouTube platform. Crowdsourcing videos is an important part of the Battabox strategy and they were able to achieve this using YouTube Direct running on Google App Engine integrated into their website. They also provided an Android App that enables users to upload videos directly from their Android phones.

This year so far has been about creating connections with local communities and resharing our knowledge and love for Google products either offline in our conferences or online with Google+. With the success we've had with our conferences in East and West Africa, we are excited to announce that in May we are coming to Dakar for g|Senegal and Abidjan for g|Cote d’Ivoire!

This year’s g|Senegal will have more hands-on coding sessions for more experienced developers, more sessions on new Google technology, and more local success stories--perhaps you will be featured. Join us for g|Senegal on 9 and 10 May at Place du Souvenir.

For advanced developers, the Dakar Google Technology User Group (GTUG) is holding a Google+ Hackathon to help developers build applications on the Google+ API. If you are interested in joining, please flag your interest when applying for g|Senegal Developer Day and we will send you more information at a later date.

For our first ever g|Cote d’Ivoire, we are excited to take part of the vibrant energy in this era of rebuilding. The event will focus on building innovative applications and helping the fast-growing business community come online. Sign up for g|Cote d'Ivoire on 14 and 15 May.

Attention developers! Of the 90+ Google APIs, which is your favorite? We know that we fell in love with the Google+ API after we saw the amazing applications built from the Hackathons in South Africa and Kenya. We want to continue spreading the love!

This Valentine’s Day we’re thrilled to announce that we are holding three more Google+ Hackathons with the support of the Google Technology User Groups (GTUGs) in Accra, Kampala, and Lagos.

If you are ready to wow us with your application, please apply for the event using these forms: Kampala on March 10 at the 4th floor of Solis House, Lagos on March 17 at the CCHub Nigeria, and Accra on March 21 at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology.

Remember to start today on getting those creative juices flowing! Familiarize yourself with the API and review these resources. Begin gathering ideas and coding a little. Take advantage of the Google+ Platform Office Hours on the 15th of February. If you have any questions, please address them to us in our Google+ Hangout on February 23. Use the Hackathon to perfect your application and win one of the multiple prizes we will be awarding - including a ticket for the overall winning application to Google’s premiere developer event, Google I/O!

2011 was a busy year for the Google Africa team. The g|Day developer and business conference visited Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, and Angola in 2011, expanding from 5 countries in 2010 and from 2 in 2009. Over the year, business professionals, entrepreneurs, and marketers have explored innovative technologies to get online and to serve their business needs. Developers and webmasters have had an in-depth look at Android, Chrome, App Engine, Maps, Webmaster Tools, and more.

While we are excited about all the activity growing in the local communities, we are always looking for opportunities to engage with new communities of developers, business leaders, and entrepreneurs who are as passionate about technology as we are. Therefore, we are excited to kick off the 2012 G-Day roadshow with G-Tanzania and G-Ethiopia.

G-Tanzania will be held on February 2nd and 3rd at Mlimani City Conference Center in Dar es Salaam, followed by G-Ethiopia on February 7th and 8th at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center in Addis Ababa.

Registration is now open for these free events. Space is limited so be sure to register as soon as possible for G-Tanzania and G-Ethiopia to improve the chances of your application being accepted. We look forward to seeing you soon!
