The mail order catalog in its classic form is mostly dead, thanks to the internet. Given time and more technological advances, even retail outlets will soon be out of fashion as well. Nowadays, anything and everything can be purchased over cyberspace, and I think that’s a great thing.
What does this mean for city-dwelling humanity? The changes will seem small and inconsequential at first, but these alterations to their lifestyles will be cumulative, slowly transforming the way we do things. I’ll put on my futurist cap for this piece and put into words what I think will be inevitable for human society.

Conventional Retail Will Cease to Exist

It won’t be long until the large malls will be mostly service and entertainment centers, with retail being isolated to only perishable items like food or drink. Other minor consumable items like cigarettes will be dispensed via vending machines, as it is is not cost-effective to still have people sell these items directly.
There will still be offline places of trade and commerce, but as I mentioned above, it will be comprised of certain services that can’t exactly be delivered to your doorstep (premium spa treatments, dental work, etc.), and along with that, entertainment (live concerts and shows). To me, that’s a welcome development as malls and other places of business won’t be as cluttered and crowded. Just about every necessity can be shopped for in the comfort of your home, and you rarely ever go out for the purpose of errands.

Goods WIll be More Affordable

With more of the actual buying and selling happening online, the costs of the business will actually go down significantly. You won’t need as many people running the operations of a storefront or a retail outlet. Instead of an actual store with a handful of employees, you could just have one or two people running the website.
Costs from advertising via the conventional tri-media (print ads, radio, television) outlets won’t even be an issue, especially with the smaller entrepreneurs. Online advertising is considerably more affordable, and if you really do excel in your business, good word travels much faster over fibre optics.
It won’t matter if you’re actually operating from an old warehouse in a run-down area of the city (or in your parents’ basement); if your website is snazzy and navigable, you have a responsive customer support service, and you deliver on-time, it’ll be likely that you will do well.

Always Available

The internet does not sleep. Stores will always be open, and if one store does not have what you want to purchase, there are literally thousands of other places to look. The only current hindrance is that most delivery services don’t work round the clock (receiving and delivering, anyway), but I’m thinking that there will be companies that will raise the bar on this as well. Already, I’m already imagining small flying (hovering) delivery drones that can receive or deliver most small items...

The Future is Bright, and It’s Mostly Here

Many of the elements needed for this vision of online commerce to happen is already here. There are just a few pieces left to be filled in, and most of them have to do with logistics. Once those technical challenges are solved, we will have such a grand global symphony of goods being bought and sold over the electronic ether; capitalism super-streamlined!

    seo Building a cloud sharing service one Google technology at a time 2013

    Seo Master present to you: This post is part of the Who's @ Google I/O, a series of blog posts that give a closer look at developers who'll be speaking or demoing at Google I/O. This guest post is written by Navin Kumar, founder and CTO of Socialwok, a business sharing and social collaboration service for Google Apps running on Google App Engine Java. Navin will be demoing Socialwok as part of the Developer Sandbox and will be speaking on Google Buzz.

    Socialwok is built using a wide range of Google technologies like Google App Engine Java, Google Web Toolkit (GWT) and Google Data APIs. It also utilizes HTML5 and open standards based social protocols like PubSubHubub, ActivityStrea.ms, Atom, OpenID, and OAuth.

    I would like to share with you some of the cool stuff we have built using this technology stack and our experiences with building Socialwok on the Google Platform.

    1) AppEngine with Java language support. Google AppEngine provides a fantastic deployment platform for web applications that scale tremendously. When Socialwok won the DemoPit Award at the TechCrunch50 and presented on stage, the thousands of new signups and posts were handled beautifully and smoothly during this period. Also, with Java language support and support of Java standards like HTTP servlets and JDO, we gain the flexibility to take our app "behind the firewall" as necessary.

    2) Google Web Toolkit. Google Web Toolkit allows us to develop powerful Ajax-enabled web applications using the Java language. Forget about dealing with browser quirks and handrolling thousands of lines of Javascript. Also, with AppEngine Java, we can write all our code in one language (Java), enabling us to rapidly deploy features our users love.

    3) HTML5 and Mobile. At Socialwok, we make extensive use of the latest web standards. From your iPhone or Android, you can access our highly optimized mobile web interface, which uses HTML 5 offline capabilities to deliver "nearly" native performance from your mobile web browser. HTML5 also allows us to embed video using very standard HTML layout and Javascript. We are very excited about many more upcoming features, and Socialwok will take advantage of several of them. Here is the Google Web Toolkit blog post on how we leveraged GWT and HTML5 to build Socialwok mobile web version in under 4 days.

    4) Google Docs and Google Calendar support. We use the excellent GData libraries to provide sharing of Google Calendar and Google Docs in our feeds. These Java libraries are fully capable of most of the functionality you would expect in these excellent Google products. If you use Socialwok with a Google Apps Premier domain, you can even upload and share arbitrary files in Google Docs through Socialwok. Here is the Google Apps developer blog post on how we use GData libraries to preview Google Docs and office documents in the Google Docs viewer.

    5) OpenID login using your Google Apps account. Socialwok utilized OpenID and OAuth to authenticate you and access your Google Apps data. This means that no passwords are stored with us, and you have complete control over the access of your data. Socialwok can automatically detect your Google Apps domain via your email address or you can even use /a// on our URLs just like Google Apps. In fact, you can login in multiple Google Apps domains in the same browser with Socialwok. See our blog post for more info.

    6) Rapid deployment using Google Apps Marketplace. Socialwok can now be added to any Google Apps domain by the domain administrator with one-click using the Google Apps Marketplace API. Once added to a domain, Socialwok will appear in the Google Apps control panel of the domain and can be launched from inside the Google Apps user interface.     7) Pull in external feeds using PubSubHubbub. Socialwok uses PubSubHubbub to pull in external Atom and RSS from many different sources. We can even import your Google Buzz feeds into Socialwok. For more information, see our Social Media Suite tour.


    8) ActivityStrea.ms in and out. Socialwok can not only bring in ActivityStrea.ms from outside sources like Facebook, Google Buzz, and many others, but also produces ActivityStrea.ms output through our API. This means that you can use Socialwok with any ActivityStrea.ms capable client, and export this easily to other external sites.

    9) At the forefront of new Social Web standards. In addition to ActivityStrea.ms, Socialwok also supports WebFinger to automatically discover your Google Profile and your Google Buzz feed. We will also support many more standards like Salmon and others in order to enhance our integration with the rest of the social web.

    10) OAuth access to our API - Coming Soon! Soon you will be able to access our own API using OAuth. Users will still be able to login using their Google credentials and you can build your very own apps to take advantage of the great integrations we do with Google Apps.

    Google I/O 2013 has just ended, and even more than usual, this one was for you, our developers. This year, we focused on providing new tools and services you’ve been asking for, plus a few surprises that we hope inspired and delighted you.



    Although we put developer announcements first this year, we didn’t skimp on the cool stuff for everyone: we refreshed the look of the Google+ stream, launched expanded Hangouts, totally revamped Google+ photos, announced Google Play Music All Access, showed off conversational search, and demoed some amazing Chrome Experiments.

    Of course, Google I/O isn’t just about announcements. It’s our chance to share what’s new with you in those highly technical, in-depth sessions and for you to meet and interact with our engineers and other Googlers, in person and via the Internet. Once again this year, all sessions were recorded and are being posted to Google Developers Live (GDL) for you to peruse whenever it’s convenient for you.

    We love putting on Google I/O, and that’s one reason we created GDL. With GDL, we don’t have to pack all our presentations into a 3-day conference.     Last week we released an update to the Google+ Hangouts API, which includes several new features and possibilities to build on, like the ability to respond to facial movements in real-time inside an app.

    As with any new API, we’re especially interested in what sorts of things our developer friends will dream up, so we've commissioned a handful of them to play with it over the next couple of weeks, and to share their thoughts and discoveries along the way. The participants represent a wide range of developers -- from agencies like The Barbarian Group to independent developers like Eyebeam alum Aaron Meyers teamed up with OKFocus.

    seo How Google Friend Connect Works 2013

    We figured you might be tracking the conversations about Google Friend Connect and Facebook. We want to help you understand a bit more about how it works on the Friend Connect side with respect to users' information.

    People find the relationships they've built on social networks really valuable, and they want the option of bringing those friends with them elsewhere on the web. Google Friend Connect is designed to keep users fully in control of their information at all times. Users choose what social networks to link to their Friend Connect account. (They can just as easily unlink them.) We never handle passwords from other sites, we never store social graph data from other sites, and we never pass users' social network IDs to Friend Connected sites or applications.

    The only user information that we pass from a social networking site to third-party applications is the user's public photo, and even that is under user control.

    That's the high-level view. But what about the details? Here is more information on exactly how Friend Connect interacts with third-party social networks and applications.
    1. Google Friend Connect puts users in control over whether they're connected to their data on Facebook.
    2. Google Friend Connect only reads a small amount of user data from Facebook, and does so using Facebook's public APIs. We read the Facebook numeric id, friendly name, and public photo URLs of the user and their friends. We read no other information.
    3. The only user information that we pass from Facebook to third-party applications is the URL of the user's public photo.
    4. Google Friend Connect does not permanently store any user data retrieved from Facebook.
    1) Google Friend Connect puts users in control over whether they're connected to their data on Facebook.

    We behave like any other caller of the Facebook API. (See the Facebook developer api documentation for details.) When a user links their Facebook account with Google Friend Connect they must consent to this on Facebook itself. Here is the set of screens a user goes through:

    First, the user must click "Link in Facebook friends":



    Next a user sees this screen. This screen is from Facebook (notice the URL of the page shows facebook.com):



    The user is then asked for their Facebook username and password on Facebook. (Note that Google Friend Connect does not have access to the user's Facebook username and password.) If the user logs in successfully, Facebook returns a session key to Google Friend Connect, and the user sees this screen:



    This screen also comes from Facebook. On this screen the user is asked to consent to allowing Google Friend Connect to access some of their personal information. The user can choose to allow this access or not.

    The user can easily unlink their Facebook account from Friend Connect. This can be accomplished in two ways:

    2) Google Friend Connect only reads a small amount of user data from Facebook, and does so using Facebook's public APIs. We read the Facebook numeric id, friendly name, and public photo URLs of the user and their friends. We read no other information.

    If a user decides to link their Facebook account to Google Friend Connect, we ask Facebook for a small amount of user information. Here's an example of what might be returned:

    This data is made up of the following fields:
    • A Facebook user ID (e.g. 500013789) that is used when Google Friend Connect communicates with Facebook. The unique ID is a number assigned by Facebook -- it is NOT the user's username or their phone number. The unique ID contains no personal information.
    • A session-key (e.g. 31415926535) which is a unique number provided by Facebook, that Facebook uses to track and control what data is exposed to Google Friend Connect for the logged-in user.
    • The user's friendly name as they entered it in Facebook (e.g. "Peter Chane"). This is typically a first and last name.
    • A URL to the user's public Facebook picture (e.g. http://profile.ak.facebook.com/profile5/1038/101/s500013789_4207.jpg). If the user set their picture to be private on Facebook then Google Friend Connect does not receive the picture. Again the picture used by Google Friend Connect is public and is easily viewed by anyone on the web.
    • A list of Facebook user IDs for each of the user's friends on Facebook. For each friend, Google Friend Connect retrieves the friend's Facebook picture-URL and name.
    3) The only user information that we pass from Facebook to third-party applications is the URL of the user's public photo.

    Applications that run on Friend Connect sites (e.g. the iLike application that runs on www.ingridmichaelson.com) have access to a subset of the information that is requested by Friend Connect from social networks such as Facebook. Applications are passed the following data from Friend Connect:
    • Your Google Friend Connect ID. This is a number. It is not a name, and it is not your ID from Facebook or any other social network.
    • Your nickname that you entered in Friend Connect. (NOT your friendly name from Facebook or any other social network.)
    • The URL to your public photo from Facebook or another social network. And only if you've chosen to make that photo public on the social network. (Note that Facebook includes the user's Facebook ID in the URL of their profile photo. We intend to obfuscate this URL in a future release of Friend Connect.)
    • The Google Friend Connect IDs (and Friend Connect nicknames, and photo URLs from linked social networks) of any of your friends who are also members of this site. (Not all of your social network friends. Not their social network IDs.)
    That's it. These apps have no access to additional profile data -- yours or your friends. The apps have no idea who else is on your friends list on your social network(s).

    4) Google Friend Connect does not permanently store any user data retrieved from Facebook.

    Google Friend Connect purges all of the data it receives from Facebook frequently. The Facebook terms state that application developers should do this every 24 hours; we do it more often (currently every 30 minutes) because we don't want to store this data any longer than we absolutely need it.
