seo Building Web Apps? Check out our Field Guide 2013

Seo Master present to you: Author Photo
By Pete LePage, Developer Advocate

Yesterday, the Chrome Developer Relations team launched several new resources, including the Field Guide to Web Applications. It’s a new resource that is designed to help web developers create great web apps. We’ve heard loud and clear from users that they want more and better web apps, and we hope this new field guide will enable you to create those web apps. Our fictitious author Bert Appward guides you through topics like the properties of web applications, design fundamentals, tips for creating great experiences, and a few case studies that put best practices to use. Whether you're building your first web app or are just looking for ways to improve your existing apps, I hope you'll find the field guide useful.

We built the field guide to embody the principles and best practices that it preaches. We stepped away from the normal webpage look, and instead designed the experience around a field guide. We used many CSS3 features like box-shadow, opacity, multiple backgrounds and more to provide a rich, visual experience. To make sure that it worked offline, we used AppCache and other than some URL rewriting techniques, didn't use any server-side code. We used the HTML5 History API to maintain page state even though everything is served from a single HTML page. We've started working on a new case study about the field guide, so check back soon for that!

Pete LePage is a Developer Advocate on the Google Chrome team and works with developers to create great web applications for the Chrome Web Store. He recently helped launch the +Chrome Developers page on Google+.

seo The Code Review: OpenSocial maturing, Rhino on Rails, and more 2013

Seo Master present to you:

February already? Spring is here, and you can tell in Mountain View as the rain has stopped. Spring brings out your social side, and we have seen a lot of growth with OpenSocial and other social APIs.

There was plenty of talk across the Web about the new Social Graph API that Brad Fitzpatrick announced. The API uses the Google crawler to gather up the XFN, FOAF, and other public social data that is spread out already on the Web. You can ask for a social graph that puts this together and gives you back a nice set of JSON.

OpenSocial is moving forward also. OpenSocial 0.7 is now available in the Orkut sandbox, MySpace announced their new platform, and a great group of people got together at Six Apart for a Hackathon.

On another note, I had the pleasure to sit down with Steve Yegge at the Google Kirkland office to discuss his Rhino on Rails project. He gave frank feedback on the history, present, and future of the project and I look forward to hearing, and sharing, more.

There was more Web development news too. Two companies came out talking about GWT. First, YesMail talked about the work behind their 17 GWT modules and 33,000 lines of GWT code. They discuss the design, scalability, and testing practices that they employ.

Compiere, creator of an opensource ERP, talked to us about their recent GWT port from a Swing application.

Developers from Autodesk Labs also came to talk to us about their work implementing offline support to their Project Draw project using Gears.

Fun times at Google

Christian Schalk has spearheaded the new Google Technology User Groups, and there are events going on hopefully near you.

One such Mountain View event is a hackathon for JavaScript developers. Come to the Googleplex and enjoy code, beer, and prizes!

Open Source

We have created a new blog dedicated to Open Source, and there are already good posts covering: the growth of Project Hosting, sponsorships of the Freedom Training Task Force and Wine improvements, and the grand prize winners for the Google Highly Open Participation Contest.

And, to finish up, check out the new iGoogle Themes API.

As always, check out the latest tech talks, subscribe to the Google Developer Podcast and visit the Google Code YouTube channel.2013, By: Seo Master

seo Image results now available from the Custom Search API 2013

Seo Master present to you: Author Photo
By Nam Nguyen, Software Engineer

Last year we added image results to Google Custom Search Engines to enable sites to offer image-only results that showcase photos and other digital images. For site owners who want more flexibility in presentation, they are also now available from the Custom Search API.

Read more about accessing Image Results from the Custom Search API or try it out in the Custom Search API Explorer. For billing purposes, image queries will be treated the same as web queries. If you are still using the deprecated Google Image Search API, now’s a great time to switch!

Below is an example of an image search to find small jpeg images of flowers:

https://www.googleapis.com/customsearch/v1?key=YOUR_API_KEY&cx=YOUR_CSE_ID&q=flower&searchType=image&fileType=jpg&imgSize=small&alt=json

With a valid key and cse id, here is a possible json result returned for an image item:
{
"kind": "customsearch#result",
"title": "flower-photo",
"htmlTitle": "\u003cb\u003eflower\u003c/b\u003e-photo",
"link": "http://images.example.com/flowerphoto.jpg",
"displayLink": "images.example.com",
"snippet": "photo of flower",
"htmlSnippet": "photo of \u003cb\u003eflower\u003c/b\u003e",
"mime": "image/jpeg",
"image": {
"contextLink": "http://images.example.com/flowergallery.html",
"height": 100,
"width": 100,
"byteSize": 6104,
"thumbnailLink": "https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:3x4MPL3",
"thumbnailHeight": 82,
"thumbnailWidth": 82
}
}

which you can use to render the image in your own site.

Note that you need to enable image search in your custom search engine control panel for the custom image search to work.

Nam Nguyen works on the JSON/Atom Custom Search API, which lets developers retrieve and display results from Google Custom Search programmatically. He is dedicated to making developers' lives a little easier by providing a simple API.

seo Google Plugin for Eclipse and GWT 2.2 now available 2013

Seo Master present to you:

(Cross-posted from the Google Web Toolkit Blog)

Google Plugin for Eclipse and GWT 2.2 are now available with several new features that we’re excited to share with you. First, Google Plugin for Eclipse 2.2 directly integrates GWT Designer, a powerful WYSIWYG Ajax user interface (UI) designer that makes it much easier to quickly build UIs. Second, developers can take advantage of the modern web with the first round of HTML5 support within the GWT SDK. Additionally, GWT’s CellTable widget now offers new functionality, such as default column sorting and the ability to set column widths. These new features make it even easier to build best in breed web apps using Java-based tools and Eclipse. And while these apps can be run on any platform, Google Plugin for Eclipse makes it very easy to deploy, and run, on Google App Engine.

Instructions for installing this new release of the Google Plugin for Eclipse and GWT SDK can be found here: Getting Started with Google Plugin for Eclipse.

If you’re simply looking for the GWT 2.2 SDK, you can find it here: GWT SDK Download.

GWT Designer
Directly integrating GWT Designer into the Google Plugin for Eclipse has been a top priority for us over the past few months. We’ve had some very positive feedback from the community early on, and for this release we not only wanted to provide the best developer experience when using GWT Designer, we also wanted a seamless experience across GWT Designer and GPE.

HTML5 features
GWT 2.2 includes support for HTML5-specific features, such as the Canvas element, which allows for dynamic, scriptable rendering of 2D shapes and bitmap images, and the embedding of Audio/Video tags. These APIs are still experimental and may change a bit over the next couple releases, but we feel that they're stable enough to deserve some real mileage (by you). Below is a demo that one of the GWT team members, Philip Rogers, put together to showcase the new Canvas support in the GWT SDK. You can find the code for this demo here: http://code.google.com/p/gwtcanvasdemo/.

New CellTable APIs
With GWT 2.1, we found that developers were often times incorporating a CellTable widget into their project, and immediately adding the boilerplate code to add sorting, and then having to jump through hoops to set column widths. With the GWT SDK 2.2 release, this functionality is now part of the CellTable widget itself. Where we can, we want to improve the native GWT widgets, adding features and functionality that minimize the custom code that developers have to write.

If you would like to see these updates in action, checkout out the CellTable example with the GWT Showcase app.

A note about Java 1.5
GWT version 2.2 will only have deprecated support for Java 1.5, resulting in warnings when building applications. While Java 1.5 will still work for this release of GWT, developers should upgrade their version of Java to correct these warnings and ensure compatibility with future versions of GWT.

If you have questions or want to provide feedback, we’d love to hear it, and the best place to do so is in the Google Web Toolkit Group.

seo Step By Step – Adding Video To Wikipedia 2013

Seo Master present to you:

Step By Step – Adding Video To Wikipedia

Adding video, audio or images to wikipedia.org can have a two fold effect on your marketing.
It can be used for either getting quality backlinks to your own content or to hijack traffic from wikipedia.

The quality of the content has to fit in with the article you want to add your multi media content to though. The admins within wikipedia are very quick to delete content they think is not relevant or does not fit with the article or the section of the article.

So the first thing you need to do is choose between what form of multi media you want to add.

Here are the three options we have:

Images:
           This is not new, images have been on wikipedia.org for a long time. I found personally the best way to do this was by adding local images of a library, an underground station and adding these images first to my own local seo site and then adding to commons.wikimedia.org and then from there adding them into wikipedia.org in a relevant page about my locality with the file source leading back to the page on my site that the image came from. I found this particularly useful if linking to a content page and I would subtly add some info about a free video training course or a free consultation.

Video:
           This is very new! This gives us a huge opportunity as there are millions of articles on wikipedia and very few of them have video! Its possible to add video you have on sites like youtube and flickr and its also OK to add video from your own site as long as you own the rights to that video. Now we have some options within these options...If using your youtube channel then you can link to your channel, your video URL or you can use your name and link that to anywhere really as long as its to your own stuff on the web. Linking to a google+ profile might be the best way of doing this and it needs to be tested, especially if you are syndicating your youtube channel content to Google+ which can be done by using ifttt.com and in the hootesuite account you link to ifttt.com then make sure you have google+ activated :)

Audio:
           This is another great opportunity especially if you are doing podcasting or curating articles via audio. What you can do here if not, is use content that is freely available as public domain licensed content...for example martin Luther King speech but also link your name to your own content with your name being the vehicle for anchor text to your chosen web page, I would think that linking to your Google+ profile would be acceptable for the wikipedia.org admins!

There are a couple caveats though!
  • Your wikipedia.org user account must be more than 4 days old for video and audio.
  • You must have made at least 10 article edits before being allowed to add video and audio.
  • You cannot add How To Videos... (been there...tried it ...got deleted very fast!)
OK so to add multimedia to wikipedia.org here are the steps needed.

For video (and I think audio but never used audio myself) follow the steps below...
  1. Take a video of something that is relevant to a wikipedia.org article and that you know does not have a video in the section you want to add a video to.
  2. Go to firefogg.org and convert your video file to ogg theora file type (.ovg) and save on your desktop or a folder where you can easily find it.
  3. Go to commons.wikimedia.org and click on the left hand side link that says “Uploads
  4. You will be presented with a wizard, close the first screen and click on next and follow the wizard along to upload your ogg theora video file (.OVG)
  5. Next you will be asked for the rights you have to add this content to wikipedia.org, this is why its best to use your own videos that you created. I choose the first option that this is my own work.
  6. Next it will ask you to add a description, at this point you can simply add more info. and build out the Title into a description. Stick to what your content is about and do not use anything related to affiliate marketing, keep it factual.
  7. Next you will be given a code that you can use on a wiki page. It will look something like this... [[File:Northern Thailand Cuisine Fried Insects At Market Stall in The Floating Market Pattaya, Thailand.ogv|thumb|Northern Thailand Cuisine Fried Insects At Market Stall in The Floating Market Pattaya, Thailand]]
  8. Next go to the wikipedia.org web page and then to the section that you want to edit and click on the edit link directly parallel to the section heading and it will open up the edit section, add your code to the bottom and click preview first to check and if you see your video appear when in preview mode, then you can click save and you are done as far as adding a video to wikipedia.org.
  9. We are not finished yet though, we want to add a clickable link directly from wikipedia.org to your own web page on the web. This can be a Youtube Channel, Google + Profile, Website etc.... So we go back to commons.wikimedia.org and we click at the top where it says contributions. From here we scroll down and find the video file we just uploaded and click on the first edit link you see on the right hand side as you scroll under the video (The video will show on the page)
  10. OK now that we have entered the edit area we have two choices. First we can add a hyperlink to where your name is or we can add a hyperlink to a keyword in the description or we can add hyperlink to where it says file source Own...I have done both with where it says file source own and also where my user name/author name is. I recommend you use your author name. This is done via the hyperlink icon in the edit page which becomes a WYSYWYG editor with toolbar at the top of the edit section. Once you have added your link simply save and then go back and refresh you wikipedia.org page and check that the hyperlink is there.

That's all there is to it but this can be simplified by using the Wikipedia Video Submitter which is available by registering at my Traffic Academy membership site. It has a free membership level and a premium membership level but the free is more than enough for you to check out some of my other work, video training and software.  Click on this link http://traffic-academy.kissim.org/register and you will be taken to the registration page where you can then go into the membership and access the wikipedia video submitter.
