For developers and engineers, the best way to learn something is to get your hands dirty and try making something. That is why Google hosts many hackathons around the world. Last November 17 and 18, we had a bigger experiment at Gangnam (yes, this is the very Gangnam in Gangnam Style!) in Seoul, South Korea which expanded a 1-2 day hackathon into a much longer one which we called Google HackFair.
The idea was to give developers enough time (2 months) to develop something bigger and provide a nice chance to showcase their projects. 153 developers submitted 92 projects, and 40 projects were chosen from among them and displayed. Developers used many different technologies, including Android, Chrome, App Engine, and HTML5, and they completed creative and interesting projects: a remote controlled car guided by Android, a serial terminal for Chrome, a braille printer using Go, and many more!
Besides the exhibition, we also prepared a mini-conference and GDG (Google Developers Group) booth where Googlers and community developers gave 27 sessions in total.
More than 1000 people attended and enjoyed the Google HackFair. Although the event is finished, developers continue updating and polishing their projects. It was a great time indeed.

Every year, coders and designers have been gathering to meet with experts in disaster response and international development, to spend a weekend designing tools and hacking code for the public good. This weekend, December 3-4, 2011, the next Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK) hackathons will be taking place in cities around the world, with the simple idea that technology can and should be used for good.
Led by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Hewlett-Packard, NASA, and the World Bank, RHoK brings together hackers of all stripes to create open source software solutions that address issues of global interest and assist the organizations working on those issues. The fourth round of global RHoK events will be taking place in more than 30 cities on December 3-4, 2011, and you are invited and encouraged to attend.
Some of the interesting solutions that have been developed at past events include I’mOK, a mobile app that was used after the Haiti and Chile earthquakes, CHASM, a visualization tool for mapping landslide risk which is being used by the World Bank around the Caribbean, and Bushfire Connect, an online service for real-time information on fires in Australia. Hackers have also helped develop features for Person Finder, a tool created by the Google.org Crisis Response Team to help people find friends and loved ones after disasters.
We’re inviting all developers, designers, and anyone else who wants to help “hack for humanity” to attend one of the local events this weekend, December 3-4. You’ll have a chance to meet other open source developers, work with experts in disasters and international development, and contribute code to exciting projects that make a difference. Googlers will be attending several events, including those in San Francisco, New York, London, and others. We look forward to meeting you there!
And if you’re part of an organization that works in the fields of crisis response, climate change, or international development, you can submit a problem definition online, so that developers and volunteers can work on technology to address the challenge.

Hackathons are a blast. There are few experiences better than writing code all night with dozens or hundreds of others, consuming free food, and converting that sweet sleep deprivation into creativity as you hack. As hackathons go, this one is spectacular: Hack4Transparency takes place in Brussels at the European Parliament. The goal of this event is to make data more accessible and intelligible to consumers and to government.
You expect food and WiFi at a hackathon. But this is really cool: if you’re selected to attend, the hackathon pays your travel and accommodation expenses, and a couple of the best hacks will win a prize of €3.000. If that got your attention, read the full story on our Open Source Blog, and then apply to attend.
When I was a wee hacker, I would sometimes break up my coding sessions with a primitive videogame called Pong. Physicists at Cambridge University are still playing this game, sort of, except now they’re knocking a single electron back and forth. As if that Pong ball wasn’t small and easy to miss enough already.
Finally, if you have some time this weekend and you’re not coding or playing video games, you can check out this excellent collection of sounds from spaceflights posted by NASA. You can even make them into ringtones, so if you want to hear a 50-year-old Sputnik beep when your friends call, go for it.

seo Get your HTML5 game on 2013

This has been an exciting year for web developers, with all the new features being made possible by HTML5 and browsers getting faster by the day. One of the big surprises has been the rise of HTML5 gaming, with the open technology stack of HTML, CSS, and Javascript becoming a viable platform for games on the web. That’s why, next month, SPIL Games and Google will be running an HTML5 Game Jam event on both sides of the Atlantic, and you’re invited!
In the Netherlands, we’ll be hosting a sleepover event at the Hilversum headquarters of SPIL Games. SPIL recently converted their 47 mobile portals to work on mobile HTML5, and is running a $50,000 HTML5 games contest. Hilversum is a quick train journey from Amsterdam and the spacious premises are the perfect setting for hardcore games hacking, which means we’ll be coding HTML5 games all weekend. Participants will be able to sleep over on-site. In which case, please bring a sleeping bag, change of clothes, and don’t forget your toothbrush! We’ll also mail out a list of hotels in the Hilversum area for those who’d rather book a room instead (at your own cost).
Meanwhile, we’ll be running a parallel event at Google’s office in downtown San Francisco. We won’t quite be pulling an all-nighter like our friends in the Netherlands, but we will keep our doors open till midnight.
This will primarily be a hands-on hackathon in both locations, which runs from Saturday October 9th, 10am to Sunday October 10th, 6pm. We’ll kick off with short talks on the technology, followed by pitches from anyone with ideas on a great game. Then it will be hacking all day. We’ll pick up again on Sunday at 10am, and wrap up at 6pm with presentations and judging. There will also be chillout areas with games and diversions, and food and drinks to fuel your frenetic hacking.

Google Green - Help us all be a little bit greener!
A team from the GDG Karachi Extended event in Pakistan developed a concept for ‘Green It’ — a Google+ based app that would allow users to report local environmental concerns, gain validation of the issue via nearby smartphone users and aggregate reports in a public online interface. Users would be encouraged to participate through a rewards system.
Google Ideas - Conflict reporting for blackout situations in repressive regimes
A team from the San Francisco Extended event developed a product concept for Silent Lens; an Android application which would allow citizens to safely send encrypted image-based messages over multi-modal ad-hoc mesh networks. The app would allow citizens to anonymously report issues or violence in repressive regimes when other phone or Internet connections may be temporarily limited, or intermittently severed.
Google Politics & Elections - Citizen Engagement for Politics & Elections
A team from the Lagos GDG I/O Extended event at the Co Creation Hub in Nigeria built a prototype for Assembly Bills — a web based platform that can help Nigerian citizens provide input on legislative bills and policy remotely, without having to fly across the country to the capital of Lagos to provide input in person, as is currently necessary. Keep an eye out for their new site!
Winning teams received tickets to attend I/O 2013, along with the honorary title of "Google Developer for Good, 2012". Congratulations to the winners, and a huge thanks to all participants for their hard work. We look forward to seeing the winning teams build out their ideas!

seo GTUG Campout - 3 Day Hackstravaganza 2013

The Silicon Valley Google Technology User Group (GTUG) held the first GTUG Campout, a 46 hour hackathon, over the weekend of August 7-9. Nearly 200 developers, designers, and business people came to build working applications using Google Technology, focusing largely on the Google Wave API.
The event was intense, spanning 3 days. In that time, attendees had to pitch ideas, form teams, and code like heck to have a working prototype to demo by Sunday evening.
Friday evening, we had over 50 pitches. Afterwards, people had a chance to mingle and find teams that they wanted to work with. Groups whiteboarded and discussed their ideas, then started working hard. Over 30 coders were still working past 2:00 am Saturday morning.
Sunday night we had 32 presentations of working applications followed by wooden nickel style voting to determine the winner. The crowd chose Videowave, a Wave gadget that allows synchronized viewing of videos from YouTube. They were awarded 1 pass to Google I/O '10, 2 G1 phones, and lunch with members of the Wave team.

Google.org has joined forces with the I/O Extended team to bring you the "Develop for Good" Hackathon. We’re looking for hackers to tackle issues around repressive regimes, engaging citizens in politics and enabling us all to be greener!
Almost anyone can participate in the hackathon from just about anywhere in the world. Many of the Extended events are already hosting hackathons, so we encourage you to find an event near you or start your own. If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, Google.org will be hosting a ‘Develop for Good’ hackathon at the San Francisco I/O Extended event.
Here are the three challenges developed by the Google teams:
- Google Ideas: Conflict reporting for blackout situations in repressive regimes.
- Google Politics & Elections: Citizen Engagement for Politics & Elections.
- Google Green: Help us all be a little bit greener!
Developers can start preparing, and even coding, right away and then bring their ideas to the Extended event Hackathons during I/O (though we welcome you to participate even if you’re unable to attend an event). Pencils down on Friday night—hacks must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (PDT) on June 29, 2012 via this form.
After June 29th a team of Googlers will judge the submissions for each challenge. We will announce the winning hacks for each challenge by about August 1st, 2012. There will be one winning hack selected from each challenge area, and each will receive up to 5 tickets to I/O 2013, along with the honorary title of "Google Developer for Good, 2012". In addition, we’ll award one of the latest Chromebooks to each member of the team producing the best web app across all three challenges.
If you are interested in getting involved, we recommend signing up for an I/O Extended event near you and then checking with the organizer to see whether a hackathon is part of the agenda -- or hosting your own Extended event and hackathon!

On June 2nd and 3rd, volunteers around the world are coming together for the Random Hacks of Kindness Global Hackathon. Born in 2009, Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK) is the brainchild of a partnership among Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, HP, NASA and the World Bank. The RHoK international community is over 4000 strong, encompassing not only computer programmers but also engineers, designers, web experts, project managers and other tech-savvy do-gooders, as well as subject matter experts in areas as diverse as disaster risk management, climate change, water, health care and human rights. This group of unlikely collaborators works together to define challenges facing humanity in local communities all around the world, and then to rapidly prototype solutions during an intensive weekend of round-the-clock work.
Fueled by plenty of coffee and a strong desire to make a difference in the world, "hackers for humanity" working alongside subject matter experts have created innovative solutions to pressing problems in their communities.
RHoK Global in June 2012 will be taking place simultaneously in 21+ cities globally, from Seattle to Santo Domingo, from Philadelphia to Prague. Googlers will be attending the events in San Francisco, Prague, and other locations, and we hope you can join us.

- A team at RHoK Sydney created a crowdsourcing tool to allow Australian citizens to rapidly report and respond to bushfires.

This year, the second edition of the EUhackathon is taking place on 20 and 21 June, and the theme is Hack4Kids. The event is organised again in conjunction with the European Institutions in Brussels.
The EUhackathon concept aims to build a bridge between the "old" (the European Institutions and lawmakers) and the "new" world (the Internet and coders). The 2012 edition adds the dimension of putting children at the center of the event as end-users and as members of the jury.
The Hack4Kids EUhackathon revolves around two tracks: 1) child safety and 2) child creativity.
The first track offers developers a chance to create or improve tools that enhance the Internet experience of children and parents. Ideas include providing simple and robust reporting tools for harmful online content or behaviour, crowdsourcing content classification, creating easier parental control tools, and education and awareness raising.
The second track invites developers to explore how industry can support and improve children's creativity online and offline. For example, this could include enabling children to easily create new online content, from building their own 3D game environment to producing their own hit single.
Selected applicants will have their travel and accommodation costs covered and the winner or winning team in each track will be awarded €5,000. Not to forget, there will also be free food and WiFi.
Interested candidates can submit an online application until Monday the 30th of April 2012 at noon CET.

Our Google Developers House (#googlesxsw) will be open on March 10th - 11th and is part of the Google Village at SXSW, which is free to all conference attendees.
Come hang out with Google Developer Advocates, Engineers, Product Managers, and other Googlers from across the company. Come for major hacking or just to chill at the Google TV lounge or roast s'mores by the GTUG firepit. If you can’t make it, don’t worry. This Valentine’s Day we’re thrilled to announce that we are holding three more Google+ Hackathons with the support of the Google Technology User Groups (GTUGs) in Accra, Kampala, and Lagos.
If you are ready to wow us with your application, please apply for the event using these forms: Kampala on March 10 at the 4th floor of Solis House, Lagos on March 17 at the CCHub Nigeria, and Accra on March 21 at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology.

The Google Cloud Platform team has joined up with the folks at Twilio, Splunk, ESPN, Cloudant, and others to host a Sports Hack Day at the HUB in Seattle during Super Bowl weekend. Even better, we’ve extended the length of a "day" to 48 hours! That’s 48 hours for hacking on fun sports data and using APIs and technologies like Google App Engine, Google BigQuery, and Google Compute Engine for sports-themed projects.
Join us February 1st through 3rd for great hacking, food, prizes, fun, and a group viewing of the game. We’ll be hosting a workshop on the Google Cloud Platform and will also have people around the event to help out as you build your awesome apps!
