It’s absolutely mind-blowing to stop and think how much Facebook has changed during its 9 years online. Really, the only thing that’s stayed the same is its comforting blue-and-white color scheme. While the network’s most recent big announcement, graph search, delighted marketers to no end, the death of features in former years has lead to some serious backlash. If you were lucky enough to be in college and on the closed network during the golden years of 2004-2006, join us as we review the irresistible procrastination tools—er, we mean features, of years past:


1. Student-Only Status

Back when I joined Facebook in the summer of 2006, it was a closed network. No brands, moms, or grandmothers were allowed. Then high school students were allowed on, and finally, Zuckerberg announced on September 11, 2006 that anyone with a valid email address would soon be allowed access. I don’t know about you, but a hush fell over my college campus and students practically went into mourning knowing that they’d have to keep their content clean enough to avoid receiving a phone call from upset parents. But we all got over it and kept on Facebooking.

2. Whatever I Can Get

Facebook used to allow their users to accept multiple options for “what I’m looking for.” The career-minded among us listed “networking” as an option. You could also look for a relationship, friendship, or the not-safe-for-mom’s-eyes option of “random play.” However, a few college students just laid it all out and admitted they were looking for “whatever I can get.” This option disappeared by 2008, after 4 years of making college students and adults everywhere look just plain desperate for a date.

3. No News Feed

The vast majority of Facebook’s 1 billion users are likely in the dark about one of the network’s greatest secrets: News feed didn’t always exist. Once upon a time, you had to type your roommate or crush’s name into search and go directly to their profile to scope out their mood and weekend plans. At my college, we called this “Facebook stalking,” which is a dramatic way to describe something that was a bit creepy to begin with. What’s even more strange is that the backlash that erupted after news feed was introduced was mostly because they thought the feature was “creepy.” Can you even imagine life without it now?

4. Celebrity Doppelganger Week

Less of a feature than a trend that made Facebook explode was “celebrity doppelganger” week in February 2010. It was a very strange thing that the social network’s development staff can’t claim any credit for. In fact, no one knows who was actually responsible, but it seemed that half of the network’s users replaced their profile picture with a shot of an A-lister, politician, athlete or, well, you name it. The trend and the multimillion member group created in support of the fad quickly faded, but it made for a pretty surreal week of scrolling through Facebook.

5. Statuses That Started With “Is”

I’m going to feel old if no one believes me, but the ability to type Facebook statuses used to be more grammatically limited. Your prompt actually read “[your name] is....”

6. You Couldn’t “Like” Statuses

You know when you really want to say something, but just can’t word it right? It used to be a major feature on Facebook, until the “Like” button was introduced in February 2009. Prior to that, your only option was commenting or, well, not commenting.

7. Facebook Gifts

If you couldn’t afford 10 bucks for a bouquet of roses for your girlfriend, Facebook attempted to save the day in the form of virtual presents. Facebook gifts were short-lived, strange, and very heavily promoted by the network. Around Valentine’s Day 2007, you couldn’t log in without Facebook asking you to buy a $1 pile of pixels that represented something real and romantic.

8. No URLS

It used to be more or less impossible to advertise your awesome Facebook presence to potential employers. Tell me that I’m not the only one who nervously waited up to grab my name as a URL back in June 2009.

It seems like only yesterday that we announced our Last Call for Google I/O contest. We’ve been keeping busy, judging Round 2 submissions for all 10 of our challenges. The winners have been notified via email and will receive a pass to this year’s sold-out Google I/O. Also, all of the Round 1 answers, as well as Round 2 prompts have been posted to the contest site.

We were really impressed with the quality of the submissions--especially with less than 24 hours to turn the code around! Check out screenshots of some of the winning entries below, along with notes from members of each Google Developer Relations group, and stay tuned for more surprises from the I/O team.

Android



Judging was easy for the Android challenge, because our first run through the apps produced a total of exactly 10 places where the reviewer said “Nice!”. Above you see a screenshot of the “Party mode” in Charles Vaughn’s “Bounce Clock”. Read about the details on our Android Developers Blog.

We received a lot of nifty doodles and it was tough to pick only ten winners. Some of the particularly fun doodles were interactive or involved a game of some sort (like Pong, or Simon with the Chrome logo). We definitely appreciated being able to view the source code of the web page to see how developers took advantage of the latest HTML, CSS, and JS technologies.

Congratulations to everyone who knew the Konami code and somehow managed to recall that Kuribo’s Shoe is only found on one stage of World Five in Super Mario Bros. 3...and after remembering all that, were still able to write a game in only 24 hours. Apparently playing video games as a kid doesn’t rot your brain as much as our moms said it would.

Almost all of our submissions were fun, technically impressive, or both. The judges were video game industry veterans, so we weren’t wowed by flashy graphics alone. We tried to reward a balance of fun gameplay and technical prowess. Some of the games were actually pretty addictive!

We saw some great submissions that put the new iframe Player API through its paces! The winning submissions offered a mix of cross-browser compatibility, stylish user interface, and the ability to reuse the player for arbitrary sequences anywhere on the web.

Apps



Our Google Apps challenge was built around Google Apps Script, a JavaScript cloud scripting language that allows developers to automate tasks across Google products and interact with 3rd-party APIs. In round 1, we asked contestants to find the median stock price of stock symbols. Round 2 was a fairly open challenge, and the winning submissions performed tasks such as predicting future traffic accidents on Google Maps, producing a daily meeting agenda using Google Calendar and LinkedIn, and sharing Flickr pictures via e-mail to friends and family.

Accessibility



We enjoyed seeing how much the ten top entries were able to achieve in such a short time in developing a caption rating app for YouTube (at least one dedicated tweeter pulled an all-nighter). Our top picks really impressed us with the accessibility and polish of their UI. All of them have TalkBack speech support through the Android Accessibility API. Most of the winners have already published and open sourced their work. If these apps inspire you, take a look at the source and contribute!

They say that great minds think alike, and in the case of Google Commerce, our developers created similar mashups. A simple store based on Google Product Search and Google Checkout could be a powerful tool for mom and pop shops. We were very impressed with the creativity and performance of the I/O countdown entries. All of the submissions were great examples of what is possible with GWT and HTML5/CSS3. It was an extremely tight competition that came down to tough decisions based on originality, visual appeal, and the size of the resulting JavaScript.

App Engine



Developers submitted a simple Fibonacci web app in Round 1, where the key was to demonstrate that you correctly handled bad input. We were amazed at the apps that were submitted for Round 2, where we asked developers to create an interesting app using one or more of several App Engine APIs. From making book recommendations to visualizing author impact on PubMed (a favorite of mine, my wife being an academic in medicine), we found many apps useful, well designed, and often quite elaborate.

With all of this week’s developer news, it’s easy to forget that Monday was April Fools’ day. As usual, Googlers channeled their playful spirits into creative new “features” for many of our products.  Did you spot them all?  Wikipedia has a recap list, featuring Google Trends’ “Cold Searches” (discover new unique things that nobody else is into!) and Google Analytics’ export support for even more external media options.

After we stopped fooling around, space.com got serious and shared this animated sequence of what astronomers have observed happening to a massive gas giant planet somewhere around 20 times the size of Jupiter: a supermassive black hole 300,000 times the size of our sun has been ripping the planet apart!  (We’re all relieved to know it’s 47 million light years away from our much-beloved Earth.)


If perchance you take advantage of the weekend to catch up on your sleep, take special note of your dreams. Scientists in Japan have been carefully studying brain scans and reached a 60% success rate in identifying what images dreamers are “seeing”. Maybe soon we can finally answer one lingering question: Do Android developers dream of electric sheep?
