Before looking back on this past year, we'd like to thank the developer community for your involvement and enthusiasm in 2008. Without you none of our accomplishments would've been possible and coming to work would not have been nearly as rewarding or exciting.



In 2008 the developer team at Google made it significantly easier for developers to build increasingly sophisticated web apps. Looking back, some of the most notable events from the last year include the App Engine launch, GWT 1.5 launch, Chrome launch, AJAX Language API launch, AJAX Libraries API launch and the broad adoption of OpenSocial.

We also worked hard to make it simple to integrate and extend Google applications through the launch of the You Tube API, Visualization API, Maps for Flash API, Finance API and Custom Search API.

We were also really happy to participate in the Open Handset Alliance where we saw the announcement of the Android Developer Challenge winners, the Android 1.0 SDK launch, and the first app downloads in the Android Market.

Our favorite part of 2008, however, was interacting with you at Google I/O and at Developer Days. These events allowed us to meet inspirational developers in 15 countries around the world who are building fantastic applications.

In 2009, we look forward to building products to make the web better and that let you, the developer community, build better apps on the web. We are already excited about seeing you at events next year.

Seo Master present to you: 2009 was a remarkable year for developers. Vic Gundotra, VP of our developer team declared at Google I/O, "The web has won!" and this year was full of launches and announcements that remind us how the web has become the platform of our day. We found lots of inspiration from the developers at Google I/O in San Francisco and at our Google Developer Days in Japan, China, Brazil, Russia and the Czech Republic.



Here's a look back at some of our favorite highlights from 2009:

• Faster Apps Faster - the theme for the recent Campfire One event letting developers know how GWT 2.0 decreases development time (it's being used by Google Wave & Adwords for this reason) and how Speed Tracer gives you new insight into speeding up your apps


• Make the Web faster - as part of an effort to Make the web faster we launched tools like Page-Speed and our DNS resolution service. We also made our internal JavaScript tools available, called Closure Tools, so you can rev up your js like the guys on Gmail. With PubSubHubbub all your feeds can be real-time streams.


• A faster browser - A few weeks ago we launched Google Chrome for Mac and Linux, along with an extension framework for Chrome and a gallery for developers to distribute their extensions -- there are over 900 to check out already! Chrome has a set of developer tools built on WebKit to help optimize your code. Plus, we released details of Chrome OS...a netbook operating system for speed freaks. Along the way, we've worked with the larger web community contributing to the exciting future of the web with HTML5.


• Mobile - Android launched on one device in one country on one carrier in 2008. This year, 20 devices in 26 countries on 32 carriers have been launched or announced. Developers have created over 16,000 apps in the Android Marketplace. Some were winners of our second Android Developer Challenge. We launched new mobile versions of gmail and calendar using HTML5. You can take a picture to search using Google Goggles and get turn-by-turn navigation with Google maps. Plus, we recently announced our mobile lab for Android hardware.


• Hosting - App Engine apps were allowed to scale beyond free quotas and Java developers were invited to try it out at Campfire 1 in April. Developers responded, with over 100K apps  built on App Engine. Open source developers using Project Hosting were able to host projects on Mercurial, in addition to Subversion.


• New APIs - Google Wave was released early to developers at Google I/O in May. Wave is "equal parts conversation and document" and showcases what is possible in the browser. Developers can build robot extensions to automate common tasks or build gadget extensions to provide a new way for users to interact. Google Maps released v3, Friend Connect got more personalized and then got cozy w/ Twitter, Google Analytics released an API and then added asynchronous tracking.


• Google Web Elements - From maps to search to translate and more, Google Web Elements made it even easier than ever to add Google products to your site.


• Labs - Google Code Labs was created to let developers know which APIs and products are cutting edge labs "experiments" and which we are committed to supporting for the long term.

It is a very exciting time to be a developer...we are just starting to see what is possible with the web as the platform. It will be a lot of fun to see where all of us, together, can take the web in 2010!

We recently announced a System Status Dashboard for Google App Engine. As developers depend on App Engine for important applications, we wanted to provide more visibility into App Engine's availability and performance.

Application development today is pretty different than it was just a few years ago. Most web apps now make use of hosted third-party services for features like search, maps, video, or translation (e.g., our AJAX APIs). These services mean developers don't have to invest in massive computing resources to build these features themselves, and can instead focus on what is exciting and new about their apps.

Building in dependencies to third-party services or moving to a new hosting infrastructure is not something developers take lightly. This new App Engine dashboard provides some of the same monitoring data that we use internally, so you can make informed decisions about your hosting infrastructure.

The Google App Engine team has been busy putting together our final release of 2012. This release includes a number of features graduating from Experimental status as well as the usual batch of bug fixes and improvements. We’ll be taking a short break from our monthly release cycle over the holidays, but we’ll be back to our normal schedule starting in February.  

Expanded EU Support
We’re happy to announce that we are expanding European Union datacenter support, based on positive feedback from early users.  You can sign up here.  Please note, deployment is currently limited to billing-enabled applications.
We understand that data locality and latency are important to developers and are committed to further expanding this support in the coming months.

Java
We've made a new Maven plugin available, added the source to the SDK for easier IDE debugging, and made significant performance improvements to the JSP compilation process.  Please see our Java release notes for more information.

Python
We’ve made a big push to bring a number of new features to GA, upgraded the interpreter to version 2.7.3, and added several new experimental features.  For more details, please see our Python release notes.

New and Upgraded Features
We also have a handful of notable features in this release:

• Task Queue statistics (General Availability): You can see statistics such as the current number of tasks in a queue, the number of tasks executed in the last hour, and more.
• Traffic splitting (General Availability): You can split requests amongst different versions of your app.
• LogsReader and Logs API (General Availability): You can now fetch requests based on a list of request IDs.
• Expanded Datastore query support (Experimental): We’ve added ‘DISTINCT’ support to Datastore queries.
